CAN'T GET GOOD PELLETS IN MY TOWN !!!!!!!
« on: July 25, 2009, 03:59:37 AM »
Hey Guys, I know this is not a very interesting  thread but its my biggest problem with airgunning. I live in Somerset,Ky. It is a small town, but at the same time a very modern town, We have the largest man made lake in the country Lake Cumberland. We have malls, supercenters and more restaraunts than anywhere i have been. And there is more firearms around here than people, but when it gets to pellet guns, forget it. There is two places Wal-mart and Paul's Discount. They have two models each of airguns the crosman 760 pumpmaster and the crosman storm xt, Beeman dual barrel and Daisy Red ryder.  Wal-mart used to have some Gamo stuff but not for years now. The only types of .177 pellets is crosman hunting(pointed) which is decent for plinking, and Daisy precision max(pointed) and Gamo PBA (spring killers). I had to order both of my guns from Airgun Depot. I hate ordering things, and I sure dont want to have to order pellets. But it looks like I,m gonna have to. I am seriously thinking about trying to make my own mold and making my own pellets. I have made lead fishing lures and sinkers for years. I just really wish someone would design a coated pellet like the PBA ammo that weighs about 7.7 grains to 8.5 grains. I really love the gold coating on PBA  ammo it seems as if it cleans the barrel as you shoot. Well I guess the moral of the story is, I,m gonna have to order some good ammo. Oh! by the way does anyone know what .177 Daisy, precision max weighs? I figured about 7.9 grains like most other standard brands. Thanks for any input in advance.AKJC1977

Hey Jason,

If you want to complain, move to The Republic of New Jerkey ! Wal-Mart doesn't even carry targets for shooting any more, let alone pellets and air guns. So get used to ordering over the Internet !

I receive GREAT Service and prices from Long Island AirGuns: http://www.longislandairguns.com/

And when Pyramyd Air has a good coupon, 10 -15% off, their buy threeget one free is a good deal: http://www.pyramydair.com/

There are many others out there, but so I don't confuse myself, I stay with these two, unless I see a good special ontheir sites.

I wish you luck buddy ! and JSP Exacts, Crosman Premiers Lights, Hollow Points and Target Wadcutters work real well in my stable !

Enjoy, and have FUN !!!

Thanks, I will just use these crosman until I have the money to order some good stuff. Actually I,m getting decent groups. It may end up being one of those ironic situations where I order some premium ammo and find that the cheap stuff works better in my gun. I plan on trying some of Beeman's copper coated 8.5 grain and Skenco's 7 grain, alloy and plastic pellets. I,m not charliedatuna by no  means, but I know the less crap left behind after each shot equals more accuracy and less resistance. That don't mean my Gamo,Viper will like them however.By the way I have found that in a .177 rifle that a good fluffy Q-tip pushed thru with a cleaning rod does awsesome. Just as I cant find pellets in this town,I cant find any cleaning supplies,So I was forced to develop My own. I put one end down into Goo Gone and push thru, the dry end soaks left over fluid back out.I did find a .17 cal. brush by Winchester at wally world for $1.97,that I run thru before the Q-tip. Some dont fit tight enuff to work, like the wooden stick ones,Ya need the bigger fluffy ones. I would'nt use anything else if it were right in front of me. Give it a try, it's like running two patches thru at once. AKJC1977

Have the same situation here in east central Georgia.   And south Georgia.   I consider it lucky that the AGs that I have shoot the.177 CPs well.  Since they are the only decent pellet to be had around here.   You can find Daisy brand and some Gamo brands but they are not accurate enough for my liking.

On a side note,  I found a shop on the Internet that said that carried a full lline of Beeman and RWS pellets and Air Guns.   I called them and was assured that they indeed had the pellets and AGs also.   I drove 90 miles to find thier shop and all they had was a few dented  cans of Beeman and RWS pellets that appeared to be years old.  And the AGs they had looked as if they had been pawned.   Nothing new.   Needless to say I was not a happy camper.   I called Beeman and Umarex and complained.  It must have worked as both companies  have removed these jokers from thier dealer list.
Gentleman of Fortune.

Hum-bug!

Hey Jason,

Just to let you know, you shouldn't clean an air gun as if it were a powder burner. Air guns need some lead in the barrel for best accuracy, most will only clean their air guns when they stop being accurate, then they require some shooting before they become accurate again, they call it "seasoning the barrel".

Many here use a weed whipper line to pull patches through the barrel, that prevents damage to the barrel. Goo Gone works very well for cleaning !

I have an eight year old Gamo 809S that started loosing accuracy after around 3000 rounds, I cleaned it, and after about 200 rounds she was back on target :)

Hope this helps, I have found from reading here that too much cleaning is bad for accuracy.

AKJC1977,
The trick is to only buy guns that like the pellets you can get locally! :D
Does your WalMart carry the Crosman hollow points or the Gamo Rockets? These seem to work pretty good in our Gamo Shadows.

Watch out using that barrel brush. If it's brass it may damage the barrel. Airgun barrels are not as hard as as firearm barrels. At least that is what most people say. I've been using Q-tips for years on my .177 air guns. I found that the "Equate" brand from Wally World is generally the best fit in the bore. As has been mentioned, you don't need to clean airgun barrels very often.

Thanks for the pointer Big bill, just goes to show that experience is more valuble than common sense, when your talking bout airguns. It seems many procedures are just opposite of what you would think for airguns. One thing for sure,I remember everything I read on this site and apply it to my to my thinking. But I do need to keep trying pellets to find my best choice.AKJC1977
