barrel droop rears it's ugly head
« Reply #76 on: August 28, 2009, 11:39:28 AM »
About 200 pellets through it, and the gun has really settled down.  Still dieseling, but the groups are tightening up, and the buzz is almost completely gone now.  So, I attached a nice scope to the gun last night with some quality rings (the kit scope and rings now reside on my B3), and yowza but this thing has barrel droop.  3.5 inches at 6 yards (the length of my garage) is not a pleasant thought.  Too much to shim, so an adjustable mount is in my future.  Unfortunately, the dovetail slots are on the short side (~4.5 inches), which rules out some of the better ones.  I've got what looks like an RWS C-Mount that will fit, and I'm going to see what it can do tonight.  I just hate to fiddle with that thing, though, it's so touchy.

I received my replacement for the damaged Air Hawk ( missing rear sight) today. In the interim I ordered one as a gift for my brother. His arrived in excellent condition, stock wise, but minus a scope stop. In my previous post I noted that I had requested a replacement with a scope stop and was told it might take longer but they would honor the request. Welllll , today the replacement arrived. The rifle looks new except for a small scar near the break lever screw( about 1/2 inch long). Bad part, no scope stop. The gun was doubled boxed but only fate kept it from being damaged as the smaller box had no supporting packing and just beat around inside of the larger box.
I guess that I will take both guns to the gun shop and have scope stops installed. I own a air hawk that I bought new ( which came with scope stop) that shoots pretty good. I will consider having them tuned a little down the road but for present will install a leapers one piece mount and  a center point scope on the latest gun. All in all for $75.00 received ,, OK bargain.

SOMEHOW I POSTED THE ABOVE REPLY IN THE WRONG PLACE OR UNDER WRONG DATE. SORRY.  JUST WANT TO ENSURE THAT I GIVE THE LATEST UPDATE ON THE AIR HAWK. Like the guy who wanted to live to be a hundred years old. On his 45th birthday he told his friends, " so far so good."

Got mine today

The gun itself looks really nice.  I actually nicked it myself already with a screwdriver tightening it up :(

All the screws and stuff are loose on it-ALL of them!  So make sure that is one of the first things you do.

Secondly, the barrel is full of some nasty black stuff.  Took me awhile to get all of it out.

I couldn't get the iron sights to move far enough over so I had to put the scope on it.  Cranking the sight all the way to the right it is still shooting 4" to the left.  When I put the scope on (had no choice) it was shooting 4" to the RIGHT!  Eventually I got the scope to shoot more or less straight, but the gun really needs some time to wear in.

I'm not sure if there is anything really wrong with it.  I had things to do so I only got to shoot 25 or so pells.  Maybe I'll get some more shots in tomorrow.

No matter what I can't get the iron sights to work. I am going to pull them off later.

I took the gun almost totally apart and found even more loose stuff!  The pivot screws were very loose which was causing some accuracy problems.

Once I got everything tightened up it has started to settle in a bit.  I still can't hit anything consistently, but it has gotten better by quite a bit.  I had to shim the scope since the barrel must be drooping a bit.

My barrel pivot bolt is loose also. After cocking the barrel will swing freely.  The accuracy still seems ok with the iron sites. But I'm farsighted, the front site and target are just a blur.
Ordered a 4-16 40mm scope for $48 from DealExtreme. Will post my impressions when I receive and sight in. I have a couple of their scopes and no problems so far.

Indeed this is a long thread and has been quite informative. I bit twice and now must get down to doing some shooting. I do have a question and hope that I am in the right section. Question, both of my Air hawks came without scope stops. is it possible that a novice can drill and tap a hole for installing a scope stop or is this a job better left to a gun smith or someone with a great deal of gun smithing  experience? I have drilled and tapped before but my screw ups were not as expensive as this could turn out to be if there is a OH! OH!. Awww Crap!!  Gosh Darn it. DAMN!!!   ETC.

If I install a Leapers accushot one piece mount is it necessary to install a scope stop? Or would a two piece  Leapers mount be OK ?  Thanks for the input,, Ben

I installed a 0ne piece 4 screws mount have have not even bothered using the stop. Mine is RS2 and have similar stop as ruger and I gave it about 1/8 inch gap betweeen end of mount for reference and have not moved since a last year.

I have one of the old ones without the stop and that's what I did just to be sure. Remove the trigger assembly, bottom out your mount, remove the pin and mark where it goes with a scribe/nail. Remove the mount and drill the hole. File the burs and clean the inside and re-assemble. Took about 15 min start to finish.

Have you shot it yet?  I can't hit crap with mine yet.  That is after taking it apart and tightening everything.  Maybe it will come around after a few more shots.  I'm really disapointed with the iron sights not working.  Maybe it has a bent barrel or something.  No matter for that little money I can use it to learn.

At 10 yards it is still all over the place.  I'm going to try and check the screws again tomorrow before shooting it again.

Keep shooting it.  Mine took about 200 or so pellets before the groups settled down, and that was after a good deburring and lube tune.  Now it's quickly becoming one of my more accurate guns.  However, it's probably my most hold-sensitive one as well, so it requires a lot of technique to coaxe a good group out of it.l

Have not shot it yet.  Still fixing the metal, removing the (plastic) iron sights working on the wood and waiting for a 1 pc scope mount.
