BSA Sportsman no neighbor friendly
« on: July 29, 2009, 12:22:37 PM »
Had this gun for over a month and finally had time to pump it up and shoot it.  Was surprised at the noise.  Was wondering if someone could direct me to something that might make it a little quieter.  Noticed the barrel is thread for accessories, etc.

On another note interesting firing cycle with the reset trigger and load pellet steps.  Was expecting something along the theme of a bolt action movement.  Not complaining, just different.  Are most PCP's similiar to this firing sequence?  Never shot one before today.

Thanks in advance, Ron

Ron, I have a Sportsman HV too, had it for a while. I love mine. Yes, they are noisy. I have a Logun carbon fiber LDC on the end of mine, very effective. You might do a WTB add for a 1/2x20 UNF LDC on some of the other forums classifieds.

The Sportsman HV has John Bowkett's "Micro Movement" action. This action has been used on some other BSA PCP rifles, such as the Ultra and Hornet. I have an Ultra carbine too, so I am quite used to the action, and like the design.
The current stable, (arsenal, quiver?): BSA Lightning XL .177, BSA Sportsman HV .22, BSA Ultra .177, CZ634 .177, Daystate Harrier X .177, TAU 200 Senior .177, HW 97 .177, HW 50s .177, HW 30 .177, RWS 92 .177, Gamo 126 MC Super, Gamo Big Cat .177, AR2078A, QB78 .177, Quest 1000 .177, Beeman SS650 .177., Beeman P17 .177.

Ron, I don't want to engage in a protracted discussion here that might violate our forum rules along this line. It is possible to have a neighborhood friendly PCP rifle. Some of the factory designs from Air Arms, BSA, Crossman/Benjamin, etc. are proof of that.

OOPS!  Sorry new to the neighborhood.  Retract all questions/comments while I review the rules.

Thanks again, Ron

Have taken your advice PC and found several possibilities.  One individual recommended a de pinger in addition to the debris management.  How do you feel about that?

I don't feel like my Sortsman HV reservoir pings heavily, not nearly as much as my Daystate Harrier X does. I'm not compelled to install a depinger on mine. Bear in mind that the reservoir resonance that causes the pinging is proportional to the reservoir size. The  bigger the reservoir, and the more air it moves on each shot, the more likely it is to ping. The BSA rifles have relatively small reservoirs and have very efficient valving. I really don't notice pinging in my Sportsman and my Ultra.

Ron, I'm going to move this thread to the "PCP Gate." I think it is more appropriate there.

Then I think I will pass on the depinger for now.  Really appreciate your suggestions.  So now if you could tell me a good place to buy spare mags and o-rings I will be semi-eternally in you debt.

That's easy. Air Guns of Arizona, AoA, is the US importer for BSA. They carry magazines and parts for BSA. You can find a link for them in the "Mall." All the BSA multi-shot rifles use the same magazine, so no worries on choosing the right one. Just order .22 mags. for the Sportsman HV.
