I keep reading about the people who have trouble getting guns. is this just through the mail? or is it just as much hassle at the stores? so far I've seen Mass. and NJ.just how much of our" land of the free" is like this? do I live in a bubble? I mean we're not talking about machine guns here! I live in North Carolina and except for handguns theres not much in the way of restrictions.

In Michigan a dealer they will not ship an Air rifle to your address it has to go to a FFL holder and you have to pay a transfer fee to the dealer who recives the rifle. This is really not the law because Michigans law reads weird, some dealers will ship a .177 but not a .22 because the laws reads anything over .180 caliber, and it has to be shipped with a trigger lock installed. Cabelas will ship to you if you fill out a notorized statement that you are of legal age and also a trigger lock statment which they provide.

If you go to a store like wally world to buy an air rifle they just sell it to you with out any hassle not even asking for a driver liscence if you look over 18. Pistols are the same all over you need a buyer permit and have to have it inspected and registered by the cops.

The laws do not apply to a private party selling and buying Air rifles.

In Mass you can go anywhere in state and buy any air rifle or pistol without so much as a blink as long as your 18 and over. Air rifles are not classified as a firearm so not really hard to get at all. Same thing for anything black powder. Only catch with the black powder is you need at least a firearms ID card to but powder and caps. I have not had any problems getting any air powered shooter of any kind through the mail until very recently with Natchez refusing to send me one. I got one anyway from another vendor. Midsouth sent me my 350 no problem and Cabelas sent my Bro a 48 no problem. I got a 2200 from Airgunsmith no problem and have sent guns away for tunes and custom builds no problem so I don't understand what happened with Natchez. That was the very first I had trouble with. Sportsman guide wont ship almost anything here either. I simply don't really know why.

I wouldn't mind it so much if they dealt with the airguns just like firearms (though I wouldn't agree with it, at least it would be consistent), as the law reads in this state (NJ), but they don't.  Granted, air pistols are handled pretty much the same, needing a purchase permit.  But air rifles are sold by gun dealers after you produce a valid Fire Arms ID card and fill out a form Certificate of Elligibility where you answer a few questions dealing with legal and health related matters, list your name, FAID card # as well as the serial number of the air rifle.  One copy is given back to you and the other is kept on file at the dealer.  There is no registration, such as with a powder burner, so what's the use??  Heres an example of a problem with this system:  A couple of years ago I purchase two Crosman 760 air rifles for my two boys.  These were purchased at a local sports/gun store.  Produced my FAID, filled out the COE form (recorded serial numbers and other info, etc) and and away I went.  About two months after that one of the rifles wouldn't hold air anymore and subsequently sent it back to Crosman under warranty.  I received a replacement back (different serial number obviously) and now I have an air rifle that there is no record of me ever purchasing it.  Does that now make it illegal in this state???  Unfortunately I see that a few more states are starting to sway toward stricter control of air rifles and thats a sad state of affairs IMHO.
