Somethin' fishy with my barrel???
« on: June 25, 2006, 12:58:58 PM »
After several attempts to get my reman Benjamin Legacy 1000 to group at a measily 10 yards with open sights (and after dressing the muzzle crown), I tried pushing a pellet through the length of the barrel with a brass cleaning rod.

There's a fair bit of drag at first, which settles down to a very moderate amount until it gets about halfway through the barrel - at which point it gets real loose. Not quite enought to fall out under its own weight, but it can't be far off. Very little pressure is needed at that point.

In comparison, I tried my Quest and one of my Shadows, and found that the pellet is definitely a little tight (there is noticable drag) throughout the length of the barrel.

I'm tempted to say that my Legacy barrel is goofy. Any opinions???

Just poor QC. Thats a fairly common condition found in cheap barrels.  Call Crosman and ask if they'll fix or replace the gun.

Vinceb,
I have no qualifications or experience in this area except for what I read from Precision Shooting and in particular Bill Calfee, knowledgable source of info concerning rimfire chambers and barrels.  If I recall correctly, a barrel may have tight and loose spots in the bore but should have some choke near the muzzle to achieve any meaure of accuracy.  Tight spots can be lapped out but there's no replacing material to address loose spots.
You might slug the barrel by once again pushing a pellet or soft lead slug of the correct dia, noting where the tight and loose spots are, return the rifle with those notes to the mfr or a smith that can analyze your results and replace the barrel if necessary.

Sounds like the barrel was backwards when they machined it, should be tighter at the muzzle, not the breach end.

sounds like you found out why it was a reman...I'd try to return it.
