Help with an air tank
« on: August 11, 2009, 02:24:45 AM »
This is my first post here and I am looking for a little assistance.

I have been shooting a Discover for some time now and have decided to build a PCP using the Howard M. Buckley plans "Making the Modern Stock Air ReseviorAir Rifle" where the air tank also acts as a cheek rest.  I have the receiver and bolt mostly completed with a Lothar Walther .22 caliber barrel ordered.

I am having an issue with the air tank though.  It calls for one with a shrader valve, which from what I can tell is nothing more than a valve tha seals the tank holding in the air and when the tank is screwed into the valve on the receiver a pin depress the tank valve allowing the air to flow into the valve where it is held till the trigger is pulled which opens another valve to allow the air to pass thru the bolt and propel the pellet out the barrel.

I checked with JDSairman and he said his valves on the regulators don't function this way but did not elaborate.  The plans call for a "buddy tank".  Can someone point to someone that has this type of tank and valve arrangement.  Right now I don't want to go any further without knowing I can buy a tank.  I know I can use one of JDSairmans elbows and quick disconntectors and hook directly to my scuba tank but kind of want the rifle a little more portable than that.

Can anyone help???

thanks,

The easiest thing would be to buy a premade PCP "buddy bottle" somewhere like Pyramyd.  They aren't cheap, however, and may not mate to the threads in your receiver.  An alternative would be to obtain a bottle and valve assembly separately and put it together yourself.  If you google for "Joe Brancato",  he sells CF SCUBA and SCBA tanks, fittings, and valve/gauge/hose filling sets.  He may be able to get or help you find what you need.

I know that the reservoir on the Parker/Hale Phoenix PCP rifle uses a Schrader valve. The reservoir on the Phoenix is a rear mount , removable reservoir that goes into a recess in the buttstock of the Phoenix. They are Brittish made, not widely distributed here in the US. Airguns of Arizona may have some insight on whether parts are available.
