crown & flyers
« on: August 16, 2009, 03:14:36 AM »
I've been trying to figure out why my Hunter Pro gets the occasional flyer..
I use RWS Superdomes almost always -- in fact, always always (thats all
thats left :)

Got to doing some reading and that led me to check the crown on this gun.
Now, to be honest, I'm still not 100% sure what a crown is or what its supposed
to do for accuracy.  Is the crown just the end of the barrel?  or is it the chamfer
on the bore?

I'm attaching a picture of the business end of my gamo Hunter Pro.. any
insight greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

The crown is the chamfer at the end of the rifling  it is should be at 90 deg. to the bore of the rifle so the pellet leaves the rifle without any part of the pellet still touching the rifling as it exits. if their is a part dragging  the pellet will be cocked as it leaves the barrel and will affect accuracy.,I don't know why the rifling it the picture is 1/2 inch below the chamfer but I would check the id of the bore and the end of the rifle to see if it touches as it exits.  I had a BSA rifle once that had a drilled out bore about 1 inch deep before the rifling but it looked like a 30 cal, instead of a 177, I was told that it was a crown repair done at the factory as a rifle return.howie
