Question bout Crosman premier pellets???
« on: August 16, 2009, 04:37:55 AM »
AKJC1977 here, I have a Gamo, Viper .177 cal, Anyway I have been on that long mission of trying to find that perfect pellet for the viper. I have the best groups with crosman, hunting 7.9 and Skenco goldenrod 8.5 but I had figured the Crosman, premier 7.9  pointed would be the one. Since they are basically the same as hunting 7.9's, but more uniform in tolerance. The problem is they seem awful tight in my breech, I have never had any pellet that fit that way in it. I mean they are not extremely tight, but ya have to put a good bit of pressure on them to get em in. And if ya dont use something flat to do it they tend to not be straight. Is this meant to be so the pellet will follow the rifling better? Because I notice a lot of drop between the premier and the same weight and design hunting, and they tend to shoot far to the left also. I had considered trying to take some fine steel wool and resize them, since I ordered two 500pc tins of them. I know just enuff bout airguns to make me stupid sometimes! HA HA. I fear though that the tight fit is putting too much back pressure on the spring and seals. How can we gauge what is too tight? and how to measure that size? I guess a drop of 1 foot at 10 yards is a pretty good indicator that I should not use them? AKJC1977

I got a tin of them also but wasn't impressed with them. They fit tight in my shooters also and accuracy is a guess on where the next shot will hit the target, I use them in my CO2 shooter's but accuracy still suffers. :0 Ed
I airgun hunt therefore I am... };)  {SHADOWS Tunes & Camo}  airguncamo@yahoo.com

Well maybe all the hype was hype? I was wondering if the ones that come in the cardboard packs are identical? They are supposed to be the # 1 choice of pro shooters. What;s up with that?

In the beginning my Viper really likes the Crosman Premier Hollow Points followed by the Crosman Hunt (Cheapy ones).  But when I started doing the GTA Matches....I used the Viper and the CPHP for the 30 yard distances.....and I would get 2 to 3 flyers out of 10.  That is just not acceptable!!!!!  I started testing every brand/type of pellet I had....and buying the ones that I never used before....i.e the more expensive ones.  Finally I found a can of .177 Beeman Kodiaks.....and they can land 10 out of 10 in the bullseye at 30 meter or yard distances.  The pros/experts say the heavy pellets might ruin the spring......might be true.....but the Kodiak flies well for my Viper....so I do the matches with them.  If I'm just plinking....I go back to the Crosman Hunt (dome) because they're ok for the gun.

Btw....if you're using the pointed pellet.....maybe the Crosman SuperPoint(?).....they're terrible out of any of my "1000" fps guns.  Maybe they're better with lesser powered airguns.

Only Crosman pellet I really ever had any faith in was the Destroyers. Finding the right pellet for your rifle is a chore,..but once you find it,..and get satisfactory results,..stick with them. No two rifles are the same,...even if their the same model and caliber or action. Example,.. My Crosman Sierra-Pro wont seat RWS SD's real good,...but with the G1, it's like the SD's were made for it!!!! Have you tried the JSB Exacts? They seem to fit better in my smaller breeched .177 rifles. Far better in quality and consistancy too. Just my 2 cents, tjk

I've never tried the "premiers" in the metal tin..... but I have very good success with the cardboard boxed Premiers.  Matter of fact I recently ordered about 10 boxes of em in .177 and .22

The boxed premiers shoot extremely well in most of my rifles in both calibers.  I've also found the CPH's in both calibers to be very accurate and a very effective hunting pellet, especially in .22

Like Thomas said though.... each rifle is different and each rifle will definitely have it's own preferences when it comes to pellets.....

Ironic, I am using a Viper also. It has not yet been tuned. The crosman hunting 7.9 grain have been the best lead shooter's I found also. But the Skenco Goldenrod 8.5 grain are awesome for distance of 20 to 30 yards, Never had a flyer yet. Tyr em, they are from Hungary. They have a plastic skirt and a Zinc head and shaft. Come in several weights.AKJC1977
