The lanyard is made to attach to the base of the nipple itself. Personally, I use them two different ways. I have a bulk-filled qb78 that the lanyard is attached to the nipple itself. Before I installed the fill nipple to the bulk-fill fitting, I placed the lanyard base around the nipple and then installed it normally. On another qb with an hpa tank, I took the lanyard off and just left the split ring so I could hook it to my shooting bag while I was shooting. Everything I've read and personally experienced traces a lot of problems to dirt blowing through the valve. These help keep that from happening. Of course, the best answer is for the shooter being extra careful during the filling process. Hope that helps.
