Gamo Viper-Pellet Speeds + ft. lb.
« on: August 29, 2009, 05:53:53 PM »

Don't know exactly where I should post this..... Got myself a chronograph a few months back and finally decided to test out some pellets. Used the Gamo Viper this time around. Muzzle is 1 1/2 feet from chrono. Didn't shoot 10 shots per pellet so this is not scientifically accurate. Hope someone can benefit from these results.......

Note: My Viper have a Crosman spring inside minus 2 coils (Was too long)....only shot 1200 times with new spring.

Original spring went over 3000 shots before it broke.

Crosman Wadcutters had two shots in the low 900's; 904.7 and 908.9fps.

Crosman Premier Hollow Pts. had three in the 920's; 921.1, 922.3 and 923.9fps.

It's no wonder I had inconsistant shots with the Viper using CPHP's out to 30 meter distances......

Great work Stan. I love seeing these numbers. There is always a story at the end..:)

Just a reminder that different shaped pellets will react different at different distances with different guns. That is why I love to see numbers..:) Because if you take three Gamo Viper's and shoot a ten string of them across a chrony you will ultimately get different fps, fpe and an overall deviation. Even with well tuned guns you will see differences, but will be not nearly extreme a spread as with an un tuned gun.

But the numbers do tell the story and when it comes to shooting at different distances not all pellet will do as well as others. Some pellets shape and weight allow for further distance accuracy than others. Then you have the dozens of other factors involved..:) But you have got it down now and know what works for you and your Viper.

Great stuff and thanks for sharing with us.

Thanks guys.  I had forgetten to mention that inside my Viper is a Crosman spring....snipped off two coils because it was abit too long.

Yep, at different distances the shape of the pellets will affect their accuracy, power and speed.  Right now the Kodiaks give me the best accuracy with my Viper.

If you notice in my stats; the Crosman Premier Ultra Magnums are the lightest of the heavies (Beeman Kodiak and H & N Diabolo Baracuda)....but they have the lowest fps speeds.  I can only surmise that their skirts are harder and don't balloon out to keep all the air behind them.
