Synthetic Oil ( Good Or Bad??? )
« on: August 30, 2009, 01:27:09 PM »
Hey everyone - I know there's quite a few mechanics on this forum - Just had a question

I'm looking at getting a Toyota Pick Up Truck and found this on the local craigslist :

http://roanoke.craigslist.org/cto/1349733514.html

I called the guy up and he said he changed the oil to synthetic about a year ago.  He also said that everything has been running fine since then - he said it's a solid - running truck.  Question is - Was his switch a good / bad decision or does it make a lot of difference?

Thank You In Advance

Tylor

Doesn't really make a difference as long as it was changed on a regular basis. The only real advantage synthetics have over dino oil is that they last a bit longer.

Mobil1 is a good oil. But the reason most people use it, is because it's CHEAP. I get it by the quart at Walmart for just under 2 bucks.
I use Amsoil in my bikes and race car though. Can't go wrong with that stuff!

If it's not leaking or burning you shouldn't have a problem with it.  It may clean stuff out some, but should have done what it was gonna do in a year's time.  The only benefit of synthetics anymore is being able to last longer in an engine that dino.

I've used synthetic "blend" for years and years, - a looong time, wouldn't use anything else. It doesn't thicken up in winter as much as regular oil - but stays a bit thicker during the heat of summer.
