Is Disco finally Dead?
« on: September 11, 2009, 07:15:52 AM »

I've been thinking about getting into PCP's, and I wanted to try a Disco because I can't justify a Maurauder now.

I know they're loud...I don't care. I could convert a QB or RWS 850, but I don't want to. One always needs another gun.

So the question is are they passe'... being old news or will they stay a viable option for years to come.

I don't want to shoot myself in the foot buying old technology and regret it later, but

With all the prices on new Disco's coming down and a Disco clone available, I'm wondering ...

Should I Disco or put that white suit back in the closet and wait for that Maurauder.

Is the Maurauder really $300 better?

I would ask this in the Disco forum, but that's like asking the Pope if he's Catholic...

I don't think the discos are "passe" at all.   I have a Condor, a Talon, a Marauder and I just bought a disco 2 weeks ago.

As far as comparing the Marauder and the Disco that's like comparing apples to oranges.

The Disco is just what it appears to be....... a simple PCP that a person with no PCP experience can just take from the box, air it up and start shooting.  It's accurate and powerful and very simple,,, and that's just what it was designed to be.

While you can of course just take a Marauder out of the box and start shooting without adjusting anything those myriad of adjustments are still there in case you need or want them.  However,,, while the adjustments available on the Marauder are not "rocket science" they still do require a basic understanding  of the mechanics of a PCP.

The airgun community has of course come up with all kinds of "after market" products for the disco which now allow you to adjust the trigger, the power, the shots per fill, etc,,,,   but in it's stock form the Disco was designed to simply be a "out of the box" PCP for those looking to enter the PCP arena.  However...... even though in stock form the Disco is "simple"...... don't underestimate it's power and accuracy.

I just picked up a .177 Disco with pump from Airgun Supply for $249 and even though my Air Force rifles and my Marauder  really rock.....  I have to say I love my little disco and plan on doing quite a bit of small game hunting with it this year.  It's nice and small and light,,, it's powerful, it's accurate and it's nice and simple.... which is just what I wanted.    If I want to play around with Hammer stroke settings and such I'll go play with my other PCP's,,,, but if I just want a gun to grab and go hunting that's easy to pump up and easy to operate then I'll grab my new Disco...   :)

I'm not trying to steer you towards a disco and away from the Marauder....  If  you get a Marauder I know you'll love it, they're great rifles.... but so is the disco....

Which rifle you choose of course has to do with your needs, your desires,,,, features of each,,, and of course price. Right now at Sunshine airguns and Airgun Supply you can get some smoking deals on the disco.

Ok, I'm done... can't think of anything else to say except I personally think the disco is still a great little PCP ,,, especially at the prices they're selling them for now and I don't think the disco is "passe" at all.....

I am getting ready to purchase a Disco very soon. I have shot them and love the weight to length ratio. I plan on getting into the breech mod, trigger mod and plan on a new custom stock as well. Crosman has really made the PCP world more affordable to those who could not afford the price of a Euro PCP. Now Crosman has given us a Miracle..:)

Thanks Crosman and Josh.

Thanks,

I'm glad to hear your oppinion. You both know alot more than I do.

I want to use it for occassional FT out at L.I.F.T. and hunting.

While me and the boys are having a blast with what we have now, I'm just not good enough yet with my springers for those 40-50 yd shots, and

My RWS 850 just doesn't quite have the knock down I need for that not quite on the mark long rang shot.

With a PCP no matter which one and a heavier pellet, I will be both more accuarte because of the less hold restriction while shooting and more humane in my hunting.

You can't go wrong with either rifle.   Let us know what you ultimately decide on  :)

a question for Jeff
« Reply #5 on: September 11, 2009, 11:24:32 AM »
Jeff, I currently owned a couple Discos and a Marauder but is having an urge to try an AF gun out.  Possibly the Talon SS for it's short profile and steathyness.  Since you owned and experienced all of them, how do you like the AF guns?  Thanks in advance.

I have a .22 Condor and a .22 Talon (18 inch barrel) and I love both of em.  Both rifles are powerful and extremely accurate.  There is a large selection of "after market" accessories available for the AF platform and with all the mounting rails on the rifles it's a snap to add equipment.  You can change calibers on any rifle in about 10 minutes,  which is a great feature.  The power wheel is a super nice feature as it allows you to easily dial the rifle up or down based on your needs.  I also like the "military" look of the rifles.  Using the CO2 adaptor I switched my Talon to CO2 for the summer and performed great as my summer bird gun.    Both of my AF rifles have proven themselves to be outstanding hunting rifles and they are 2 of my favorite guns in my collection.

That deal at Sunshine for $155 was to hard to pass up, so decision made.

I was unsure about the place, but after being assured that he's legit, I called and finally got through.

For that price it's a non-issue. It would cost me that much to convert the 850 to HPA.

I just have to pick up a couple tanks. It's a good excuse to get back into diving.

Now that all the pressure is off just sit back and keep checking for the big brown truck  :)

Looking forward to your review when  you receive your rifle.....

I think you will be very pleased. I received my disco about a 2 weeks ago and can't put it down.  The gun is super accurate, easy to shoot and has plenty of power.  My gun sighted in easy and has stayed on for the first few hundred shots.  Put a high quality scope on it because the gun deserves one. That way you can watch all the pellets go through the same hole close up. :)

The Discovery has found a nitch that is destined to make it one of the classics of all time in my opinion. Powerfull,,, light,,, accurate. Im on my second one now & I have a Marauder as well. Im thinking of letting go of my current 177 Disco so I can get one in 22 cal & start a new custom build on it!!The Disco will be around for a LONG time!! Tim.

Gabe, in stock form it's rather loud.... to loud for me to shoot in my backyard range.

I just recently put a TKO muzzle brake on it though and  now it's amazing  :)

If you are worried at all about the sound levels from the Disco, I highly recommend the TKO break too.  Right out of the box mine was surprisingly loud from the shooters perspective.  After installing the TKO it was like a totally different gun.  The loudest part now is the pellet impacting its target. I am so pleased with my disco purchase.  First 3 shots on quail were all clean headshot kills at 15-25 yards.   Feels like this is the kinda of rifle that makes you feel like a better shooter than you actually are.  I haven't missed anything yet!
