RWS93 Remake
« on: September 11, 2009, 12:21:12 PM »
Well I picked up a low priced RWS93 and it looked like new but coundn't hit the broad side of a barn and had no power. This rifle was heavy, clunky and ugly. So I decided to make this my first tune and go all out, what could I lose. Built a nice spring compressor and started reading every thing I could find out about tuning. First thing to go was 3" of the barrel, made myself a fixture to make a square cut with a hacksaw and filed it square and recrowned it  with a brass screw. Then onto the stock were I cut about 5/8" of the butt of the stock, then cut off a big section of the forarm and both sides of forarm sanded down. Next a course rasp was taken to over 100% of the rest of the stock to slim it down plus cutting a real check piece in. And a couple of 7/8" holes in the butt to lighten it some more (it was butt heavy).

Now to the inside, everything was honed and deburred and a JM Small Apex Seal and a JM  E9870 Spring. The old spring was 9" long when taken out. The new was 13" long and had 3 more coils than the old one. Plus I added a washer to the guide and used the old spring cup (polished and reshaped on front of spring). Along with spring tar and moly lubes, plus the trigger was also honed and worked over.

I don't have a chronograph but I have a rifle that was chonographed at 837 FPS and this is faster. When I got it, the rifle couldn't put a pellet threw the bottom of a gallon can at 35 yds. Now it can go threw 3 sections of heavy corragated metal cans stacked together and keep on going.

Added a Leepers mount and 3X9 Tasco Golden Antler Scope. The rifle now weighs only 6 lbs 5 oz bare and 7 lbs 10 oz with mount and scope.

Here is a link and photos of the rifle.      http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2009-9/1346125/0
