folding knives
« on: September 20, 2009, 02:23:45 AM »
Long before airguns, I have this thing about pocket knives. It is partially suppressed now. I haven't bought any in a year or so.

Here are some I got out yesterday to sharpen and fondle.

L-R
- Kershaw Ken Onion Chive - little but mighty - the assisted opening works nicely, and it has good steel.
- Kershaw 1615 Ken Onion Centofante - gift from my brother a few years back
- Queen Cultery #48 whittler pattern w/ cocobolo scales - these Queen City knives with the D2 steel heat treated by Peters have blades that take and hold an amazing edge. My latest gunshow buys from a guy in Oklahoma.
- Chris Reeve Mnandi - If you ever see any Chris Reeve folding knife for under about $250, buy one. BG-42 steel, magnesium frame with bushing pivots. This one is pretty small, the Sebenzas are much more tactical and have big blades. They are all built to a machinist's dream of perfection with the best materials.
- Queen City 41L folding hunter lockback with abalone scales - this one is almost too pretty to carry. Serious D2 blade, though.
- Spyderco C52BMP Calypso Jr. - original 1999 Micarta grips - The AUS-8 steel is not great, but I have used this one plenty, and it is not difficult to sharpen. This one is kind of a collector item, and this design has great ergonomics. It has been
- Kershaw 1635 Mini Cyclone - Has Sandvik 13C26 steel, a popular steel for razor blades. I suspect this steel is not all that tough, but it can really take an edge quickly, and it is a chunk of a knife. This and the regular Cyclone model with larger blade was a closeout on the net at a bargain.

I think all the Kershaw Onion series knives are good values. The "assisted opening" feature treads a fine line of legality, but it is irresistibly neat in action.
If you want a traditional pocketknife, I recommend that Queen City #48, much better than any Case or Schrade. They are combining traditional craftsmanship with great steel.

Nice knives  !!   One can never have to many knives.....

I'm a sucker for hunting knives and over the years have bought a couple nice ones.

My 22 years at work left me with a large box of knives, of all kinds, that people "decided" they didn't want anymore  :)  I still have them in my gun safe.  Most of them were el cheapos but more than a few are actually pretty nice.  Nothing expensive but some good knives.

Anyway, enjoyed your pic,,,, very nice !!

I have more or less collected folding knives for many years.  And have a few unusual types.  But the folder that I carry everyday  is a Leatherman brand single bladed type.  Just the right size blade for everyday use and it holds an edge.   I have just recently bought a couple of nice fixed blade types of excellent quality.

And as stated, "One can never have to many knives....".

Some truly beautiful babies you have there Jerry !

Knives have been with me since I was about 10 or 12 years of age :o

As for folders, Schrade has been with me for most of my life, and I carry two with me daily :)

The Old Timer and Uncle Henry have protected my family and me a few times, and by the Grace of GOD, we are still here ! I also love my large Puma folder that I have hunted with for may years !

I also have that SWEET, Gerber Applegate Combat Folder, however the one I own has no serrations and both edges are razor sharp ! And I believe that I only paid $70.00 for it (years ago).

But the knife I carry if I expect trouble is my Cold Steel Tonto Master, one piece, razor sharp, full tang deadly !

I have many others, some, as the Applegate, stretch the legal rules for knives :emoticon:

And if I believe that my Tonto and Uncle Henry just wont do the job, I issue myself Big Bill's Carry Permit (001):o

GREAT collections!

I'm a knife collector too. Most of collection is Kershaw, Gerber, KaBar or Cold Steel.  Nothing too exotic because I usually carry them and wear em out.  Once they're worn enough for the locks to stop working or won't take an edge anymore, they get relegated to my collection box. I have a Buck folder that I got when I was about 10 years old that's sloooowly turned into a Texas Toothpick over the last 20 years hehe. I'm harrrrd on knives. A knife is one tool that I ALWAYS keep in my pocket!

I was making them for a while too. Tried making a folder....ONCE. That didn't pan out too well. Most of the ones I made were hunter/skinners made from old Nicholson files. A hand forged railroad spike knives too. I'll see if I can snap a few pics later on a post em up!

Nothing beats a good knife, I worked on the river for more years than I care to remember(before I had 5 back surgeries) and I always had to carry a good knife, Gerber's with a partial serrated edge were always my choice for a good work knife and I still carry one to this day, I can't count how many jams a knife has got me out of, fixing electrical problems, preparing fish and game out of doors, and as a avid bass fisherman a good knife is a must, I have a collection of ones I aquired when I was young mostly old timers,Bucks,Cases, Kabars, stuff like that.

Splurge on the Gerber Bro, you won't regret it, they hold a edge like nobodys business and they are double tuff, I recently bought a assisted opening Gerber for around 40 bucks at Wal-mart that has a drop point and partially serrated edge, I've used all kinds of knives but for the price nothing beats a Gerber for a work knife, I used to cut through manilla rope twice as thick as your wrist like it was hot butter working on the river with my Gerbers, and they would do it all day long, when they would start to get dull I'd just give them a few licks on the diamond sharpener and they were as good as new.

Hey Hilman! I put a Benchmark CQC7 that I carried 10 years in the case when my brother gave me the M16. It's a lot more flexible.
