Need a recommendation on a Progressive Reloading press
« on: September 20, 2009, 08:16:17 AM »
I've been reloading with an RCBS Rock Chucker for the last umpteen years. But it's getting kinda tiring changing out dies for different operations. I'd still like to keep the chucker for custom or hunting loads, but for plinking or "Full Auto Fun" I was thinking of getting a progressive.

I was looking at a few and it seems that the Lee Pro 1000 would be the best value for the money I can spare at the moment.

Anyone have any experience with this press or recommendations for another one?

Sam.   What are you reloading for?  That will help you to decide which progressive press to buy.   If you plan to reload pistol ammo then the Lee press may meet your demands.
However, I knew of a person that had a Lee and it stayed out of operation as much as in.  And reloading rifle ammo with it was out of the question.

At this time,  I am using a progressive Dillion press.  The Dillion is a very strong and well  designed press.  Can handle rifle as well as pistol rounds.  I can load in an hour what would take a person a day to load on press such as the RCBS RockChucker.   The dies designed by Dillion to use with the Dillion Press make mass production easy.  You can use other dies but the Dillion dies make the job easier.

I now use the RCBS presses for extremely heavy swagging work mostly.

Unless the Lee presses have improved in quality,  I suggest you keep looking and consider something else.
Gentleman of Fortune.

Hum-bug!

Thanks for the info!

The only rounds I'd be reloading with a Lee would be .45 ACP, 9mm and 38/357. I'd also get a a set-up for .223 Rem to make bulk plinking fodder for my new rifles.

Most of my serious loads have been and will continue to be loaded on my rock chucker. I usually look in my log book for load data/climate and load up just enough for a hunting trip. Usually 20 rounds max is all I need, so the old RCBS is fine.

But pistol ammo is always back ordered and price has risen SO much that hand loading is the only viable solution right now. Especially in bulk.

Dillon   Big blue!     Outstanding customer support...  ETC...

I trashed a part, due to my own negligence...  Tried to order the part, they had my purchase history up, and told me that that part was warrentied....  we'll replace it..  But I borke it being a bone head..  Nope, we'll replace it...  Great folks!

Their case lube is the bomb too..   if your shooting military cases, that need the crimp removed from the primer pocket, they have the easiest tool to use for that..  I've done literally thousands of cases at a sitting with it..Fast, easy!

Yep, I'm a fan of Dillon....  Nope I don't work for them!

You'll be pleased with their products...
