New gun rest
« on: October 02, 2009, 03:29:58 PM »
Well got a gun rest today and got to play with my pellet guns a bit. Nice to be able to hold still a bit more. My Rem.1200 Vantage was shooting groups about the size of a 45 cal. hole at 30 yards which made me happy :)   The whisper,,,not so well. It tends to wander a little with some flyer's?? I am in the process of building an spring compressor and would like to attempt to learn more about these challenging air guns. Just building my own compressor is a lot of fun. This forum has been great for information. And again..Charlie your triggers have been great!!!      Chortdraw

Hey Dale,

You didn't tell us what rest you bought, and you know we all love picts !

As for your Whisper, you may be holding the front end too tight, or, check your stock screws, make sure they are tight, not over tight ! And then you just may not have found the pellet she likes. JSB Exact Diabolos are favored in most springers.

Thanks Bill. I have had the Whisper apart several times and the last was to put the wood stock on it. I may have tightened the screws a bit too tight? I used blue locktite on it also. I will give it another go on the screws. It is going to be the first when I get the guts to do a tune job. It is still quite light in weight even with the wood stock and handles very nice. Wanted it for squirrel hunting as it is a light gun. The rest I got is red NCN case gard. So far I like it very much. Think I might put something a little more slick on the front rest so the gun can slide a little more easily? I can use this for all my guns also.

Hey Dale,

About your rest, I have read that if you drag them across the bench, you take a big risk of breaking the legs or leg. Otherwise they perform very well for the price. I would roll up a towel to rest the front of the gun on. This prevents some of the muzzle jump. Also, resting the stock in the exactly the same place on the stock helps the grouping.

If your group problem persists in the Whisper, it may be your pellets, try JSB Exacts, Crosman Premier Lites or Beeman Super Domes. I also find that Benjamin round nose are very good, especially for the money !

If all else fails, it could be your seal :0

Thanks Bill.  I just put a question on the air gun post that I had completed my compressor and am having a hard time getting the Torex head screw out to take the barrel off. I want to give a shot at a tune on the Whisper. I can get to see the insides of the gun if I can get the barrel off. Figured Charlie or Gene might have an answer to getting this screw loose?

Dale,

Heads up. Without proper tools that Torx screw in the Whisper can strip out, or as you've found, break the tool. That's happened to few guys already.

Part of my job entails getting out old rusted fasteners that have been in for 80-100 years and I still wouldn't risk that one. Gene and Bob have some majic way of getting them out, but do you need to open that end ????

Better to take the spring and pistion out the rear of the reciever. There is a threaded stud underneith the rear plug that the rear stock screw goes into. It has two flats you put a wrench on. Above it is a cross pin that just slides out once your spring compressor just starts to push on the rear plug and takes the spring tension off the pin.

How do you put pressure on the back of the spring with the barrel in the way? If I open the barrel and put it against the end block it is on the rear sight.

Do you normaly leave the barrels on when tuning?  Guess I have to redesign the compressor to hold the barrel instead?

OK Now I see what I have to do I have to cut a slot it the rear block to allow the barrel to extend through. I was under the impression you had to remove the barrel and put the cilinder against the block. Sorry...my bad...............

Dale,

Two small screws and the Whisper rear site comes off easily.  Sometimes too easily after only firing a few pellets !!!!!

I  turn the barrel  90 degrees to the reciever and put the rear site "pad" of the barrel against the spring compressor stop block.

Well I got everythingworking on the compressor and took the pin out just fine, now I thought the spring would just back out but it does not move as I let the pressure off the compressor.
Is there something else that should hold the spring in?

Did you unscrew the the rear stock screw stud from the underside of the reciever, below the pin ????

Once the stud and pin are out, the rear plug should move outward when you back off on the compressor

Next take the trigger group out by sliding it to the rear slightly then down.

Thank you so much for the help. I have to leave town for 4 days and can continue this when I get back. I hate to leave in the middle of a job but I hope this will be the last trip for a while. Again, thank you for all the help and I'll be back ...".as Arnold would say"....It's like a 70 year old kid getting ready to get his learners permit....grin           Chortdraw

I finally got the cilinder and seal out and I think it has a problem. Don't know what could chew the seal up like this?
