Duck Farm Hunting
« on: June 26, 2006, 11:56:58 AM »
I just recently got permission from the owners of a large commercial peking duck farm to do pest control on their farm.  They have huge flocks of starlings and large flocks pidgeons that decend upon the feeders and eat all the feed placed there for the ducks.  I've been out shooting there a couple of times in the past 2 weeks and have had a blast.  First trip I took my .177 S1k, topped with a BSA 3x12x50, and using CPHP's and Crow magnums, proceeded to eliminate a bunch of starlings and pidgeons.  Second trip I took my Black Shadow .22 and besides the birds managed to take 2 woodchucks with one head shot apiece.  That was the first hunting trip with my Black shadow and I was really impressed with the power of the gun.  I was using RWS Super HP and Crossman Premium pointed pellets on that trip.  The last time I went shooting at the farm I took a friend of mine who I talked into getting into air gun hunting.  He used his NRA commerative .177 shadow and while he missed quite a few birds he did manage to get a couple of good kills using CPHP's. I've found that the best tactic is to find a good spot near a roosting site, make an impromptu blind, and ambush the birds as they land in the trees.  I'm planning on hitting the farm again this week, I'll be sure to take some photos and post them. The owners even have a federal nuisance permit to shoot sea gulls, seems the gulls actually land on the back of the ducks and peck meat out of their backs.  Poor ducks.

Jeff,

I see you live in Long Island. If it’s convenient and you would like a company, I’ll gladly join you. I live in Queens, NY.
Just let me know a couple of days ahead.

Always nice to meet another New Yorker online :)
At the present time the owners of the farm only gave me permission to bring the friend that I mentioned in my original post, but if that should change I will certainly keep you in mind.
