Gamo 850 and silver bears
« on: March 09, 2007, 03:46:58 AM »
Last night After I put the kids to bed and the wife was at work I decided to put some pellets through the 850. So I set up my target at 10 yards and started to let lead fly. I used Hunters, CPHP's, and Silver bears. All of these shoot well out of my 880 and they did not dissapoint even though I am still in my breakin period. For the first 40-50 shots everything was going well and thats when it happened. I was shooting Silver Bears and I noticed that when I loaded them they were really loose. I loaded a pellet, sighted in, pulled the trigger "thwack" but I could tell something wasn't right. When I went to load a pellet I saw a tiny piece of lead at the top of the barrel opening. So what did I do? I loaded another pellet and "thwack" same thing but no pellet down range. Then it dawned on me what was happeniing. As I was closing the barrel after loading a pellet, the pellet was sliding slightly back out of the barrel and the skirt was bending preventing it from being able to be fired. It only happened twice, but I was really concerned that I had damaged my rifle. It doesn't seem to be shooting any less hard or accurate but I am still worried. I really like this rifle and I Know its going to be a great shooter if I don't trash it first.

I've done that a bunch and never destroyed anything, although I've never done it to the point where it didn't fire.  I s'pose you could damage a breach seal or something, but lead tends to smash down before causing much damage.  Just make sure you clean it out real good, and spend an extra 1/2 second loading from here on out so you don't do it again.  Sounds like those pellets fit too loose, if you can push a pellet in flush with the breach, then hold the gun upright and the pellet slides back out....pellet is too loose....or at least too loose in my opinion.

just my $.02

I don't think I did any major damage. And I will not be shooting anymore silver bears in the 850. Like you said I just need to be sure that I'm loading the pellet properly.

IVe been there bore also. I shoot crosman pointed pellets and they are fairly loose fitting. But I just use my nail to make shure it seated and push them in some. I think your gun is alright and you shouldnt worry. Now fi it starts to make a funny twangy sound, odd vibrations or just dosent cock...wellll you can always send it to mr. datuna and have it tuned and fixed :)
