hey guys, need advice!
« on: November 05, 2009, 04:55:23 AM »
hi ! i have a disco in .177 cal and am very happy with the gun . i am now looking for a second air gun as a back up for extended hunting and also if the disco acts up. i have set my sights on a RWS Diana 34 compact. need to hear views on the guns ability as a hunter in .177 cal.  i used springers earlier so the transition does not trouble me.
your views please.

The 34 in .177 is a superb hunter for small game like Squirrels, G-HOGS aka Groundhog's and even larger game. My Panther 34 has taken Raccoon and possum but shot placement and pellet selection is a must with these nocturnal animals. I'm sure more of the family here will chime in with their take on the 34. Ed

If I had a Discovery (PCP) that I were fond of, then a springer would be a logical choice as a second hunter, back up, or otherwise.  The Diana 34 would be an excellent choice, particularly in .22 cal.  As for the "Compact" -- I don't have that air rifle (or a Disco) but I do have a custom-tuned Diana 34 Panther, and it is a fine air rifle.  Other considerations?  Well, if you already have the infrastructure for PCP shooting, you could certainly consider something like the Air Force Talon or one of the other Air Force PCP's.  Other "short list" springers?  Beeman R9 .20 cal.  Mike Melick-tuned B-26 .22 cal.  Or perhaps a Benjiman multipumper.

The 34's are great rifles. I don't have the compact version,...just the basic wood stocked model,....but makes no difference to me,...I've killed plenty of BT's and avian invaders with it. While not at magnum velocitys,...the .22 cal can really deliver a "thump"!!!! If you want more,...go with a 350/B-28A. Then you will really feel the difference between a springer and a PCP weapon!!!! Good Luck! tjk

thanks ! another parameter is ...that i can only import one in .177 cal and would prefer that caliber to avoid stocking two kinds of ammo. the model i am looking for is also wood stocked but has a barrel chop done.

Hey Ace doc, welcome to the GTA forum and family.  Don't have a Disco and/or RWS Diana 34 myself.....but I've read very good things about them.  Good luck in your next purchase.  Where are you at.....that they have such a weird regulation on scoped air rifles?

hi g2h ! i am in india and there is more madness to our gun laws and import duties.
just a few are given below to have a few good laughs and start the day.
1) the power of the Ag is gauged by a deal wood test wherein  u shoot at 1" thick piece of "deal wood" from 5 mts the pellets should not pass thru.
2) u can import AG's but not pellets via post as they are "restricted". however u can get them as hand baggage when u come back from abroad.
3) scopes can be imported but should not be mounted on the gun .

go figure i wonder which drunk monkey was banging away on the typewriter when our gun laws were being written. :)  :)

try a B21 or B30... decent hunters and reliable as hell. Plus they got the power that a B26/ R9 or a 34 in either caliber don't have... If you can swing it, hold on and wait til a Beeman R1 comes up for sale... or a rws 350... my R 1 in .177 is a laser out to like 50 yards...
