Anyone just don't prefer pneumatics?
« on: November 06, 2009, 01:19:41 PM »
My local club is having an open night for adult air gun shooters on their indoor 10M range.  Some very serious guys there but thought I might give it a go.  Was asking on the Diana what might be an inexpensive 10M gun, just for cutting my teeth on.  I came across a pretty good deal on a like new Daisy 753.  Had an 853 but was not impressed.  Then picked up a nice 953 with the Pilkington mod.  I decided to try it out today, since it's the same set up as the 753 (except for sights and barrel) and I only tested it when I received it a little while ago.  Well, after five shots (pressed for time this evening) I don't think I want a 753.  Just don't care for the cocking (long stroke and then it sort of snaps in place at the end) and, even more so, it seems anti-climactic when I pull the trigger.  Zero recoil.  Only the pellet hitting the trap.  Guess I just like the mechanical aspects of springers more.  Same with bolt actions, etc.  Anyone else ever feel this way about pneumatics?  (It didn't help that I followed the 953 with a late 70's little Milbro kid's springer with coarse sights, heavy trigger and ragged seal, then shot a tighter group.)  Like my Sheridans but just can't warm up to these Daisy's.

I have a 953, and I think it is a great little short plinker.... It is also the gun that set me off looking for more power. I have to be in the mood, but I think there is a lot to be said for the accuracy and 5-shot clips -- which I love. Certainly not a jolt to pull the trigger like a more powerful gun, and I really don't think it is any kind of thing to hunt with for even the smallest game -- though I hear some people do it. If I have a day where it is raining and I need some satisfying groups in a short range of my basement or garage, it is a wonderful rifle to have.

I agree that the 953 is a nice little gun.  What I'm wondering is if any members feel the SAME as me regarding pneumatics.  Just not finding them that satisfying to actually shoot.

RF,

I do like the challenge of shooting springers.  That said it is also satisfying to shoot SSPs and CO2 rifles.  Generally better accuracy.  In general, I shoot the SSPs and CO2s indoors (shorter range) and springers outdoors where I can get more range.

I guess I should restate this.  I have found that I don't get much of a kick (no pun intended) from shooting pneumatics, favoring the mechanical feel of the springer more.  Anyone else share this view?  (Please - no proselytizing PCP'ers.)  :D

I'm right there with you, I love my springers, its more like shooting a firearm, I do have a .20 cal Benji that was my grandpa's (god rest his soul) I shoot it occasionally just to keep it in good working condition and one day I'll pass it down to my grandchild like he did to me, but my son already has dibs on my springers, I told him he's in for a long wait as I plan to live for as long as possible and still be shooting my springers if I'm 90, I know that there are a lot of people that think the PCP's are the greatest thing since sliced bread, but I'd rather shoot a springer anyday of the week- its more of a challenge to shoot a springer well- anybody can shoot a PCP well, but it takes practice and skill to become proficient with a springer-just my opinion, I'm not trying to start a flame war. I'm sure the PCP guys feel just as strongly about their guns.

I've never shot PCP's, had a couple of Co2 pistols once did'nt like them.I like the challenge of shooting the springer's,i have 2 Beeman rs2's and a crosman storm love shooting all of them.I recently installed a GRT111 on my storm WOW what a difference it made !! I also have a daisy mod 131 and a savage branded Gamo Delta. The Delta is currently in need of a stock the factory stock broke where the rear action screw goe's through.
