.177 or .22 Disco?
« on: November 08, 2009, 11:59:28 AM »
Forgive the intrusion - but I will be getting a Disco in the near future. I'm totally ignorant of the gun and it's capabilities. For the vast majority of the time, I shoot target with my .177 springers. However, there are some squirrels that I would like to get rid of. I haven't attempted it yet with my other guns. I will still be shooting targets with the Disco but also at the squirrels. My question - should I still get .177 and just use hunter pellets or .22 to take care of the squirrels? Thanks!  Terry

Get the .22 cal imho. With the right pellet they do a # on those tree nutters. I mean the 177 cal will kill as well . Please make mine the .22-cal for furr and .177 cal for birds.

well this may get me scolded but it all depends on the shot placement. i have taken out 50 yd jacks and a few feral dogs with my .177 disco shooting kodiaks at around 850 fps. where i live ( india ) we are generally under gunned and tend to rely on shot placement. the .177 gets the job done well enough but the margin for error is reduced by a lot.

.177 is nice and flat, shot placement is everything anyway. I use the .177 for Squirrel hunting and chicken eaten varmit control , never a problem. Head shots on Squirrels from the seated "FT" position at 50 yards are a breeze with the Disco (extra barrel band and parts from TKO) nothing even flips around they just drop. How is your local pellet selection? .22's are easier to load.
Link to a hunting post, hope that's allowed here, it wont cut and paste.

I would have to vote for the .177.
I use mine for squirrels, coons, feral cats, possum.
And yes, shot placement is everything.
But then again, it should be that way regardless of caliber.
I wouldn't want to know I needed a .22 just so I could be assured of a kill on a "marginal" shot.
On the plus side, the local walmart almost always have crosman premier hollow points or pointed pellets in stock.
Saves me from having to order online or drive 30 miles to find them when I'd rather be hunting.
I've had my Disco about a month and wouldn't trade if for anything.
Thanks Ray

Hi ,i own Discos in both calibers and i find it easier to extract all the accuracy possible from the .177 .I can do it with the .22 but not as easily.
In any case ,the .177 will take out he toughest squirell that ever lived with good shot placement out to at least 50 yards.
Ammo is also about half the price  .177 vs .22,mine shoots the CPHP that sell at walmart for 6.97  per 500 , can typicaly put five in .250- .300 at 25 yards and
a bit better than that with Cabelas  ultra magnum 10.5 grainers.
The .22 does as well with RWS Meisterkugelns and Superdomes  and almost as well with Discovery 14.3 gr hp pellets,i just find it easier overall to shoot consistently
really small groups with the .177.The .22 does seem to have more punch on grackles and starlings that i shoot off my bird feeder  but how dead is dead?
.177 drops em everytime decisively as well. The two local places to buy .22s in Maine just went up  from 30 to 50 percent on prices this past week so i guess ill have to start
ordering online, anyone know if PA still does the pay for 3 get the 4th tin for free still?

side note : get the kodiaks or at least 10 grain pellets . do not use any thing less than 8 grain in weight. the kodiak match extra heavy is the best combo for this gun. they will give u assured hits till 80 yd and more if u do ur stuff right.

I have both and they are equally accurate. At longer ranges the .177 shoots flatter which is nice when shooting out 50+ yards. If you are cost conscious .177 pellets are cheaper. If I could only have one it would be the .22 though, it sure makes a "smack" when it hits something.

Wow, I have been wearing myself down wondering what caliber Disco to buy.

In reality, I am never going to get the chance to shoot any rabbit size game where I live.

Most of my shooting will consist of super huge crows and well fed pigeons.

I am going to make a big boy decision and go for the .177, I will just yous heavy pellets to make sure i make

a statement on those juiced up black crows.

I own a few Qb's in .22 and am not happy with Co2I do however like the size and whack of the .22 pellet...

But, like i said, do I really need a .22 for my shooting needs? Im guessing not...

If you cant DAZZLE\'em with brilliance, BAFFLE\'em with B.S!!

just get the hit at the right place and u shall drop them like a sack of bricks. i shot thru three crows using my .177 disco. heres a link to the vid
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWKxQSikOVU
bloody pests , i hate them.
u can see one drop in the rubbish , one drop to the other side and the first one took off but folded after a while.
use the most accurate pellet u can find . the top list is as follows
1) H & N Barracuda aka Beeman Kodiaks
2) JSB exact
3) Crosman ultra magnums
4) crow magnums
5) predators for close range stuff ie 40 yds
i have used the kodiaks a lot and don't plan on using anything else in the gun till i can't get anymore of these.

I like the .22 cal. I find that the lighter .177 cal is more suseptable to wind drift than the .22, especially at longer ranges.

I have been shooting my 177 disco with crosman 10.5 gram premiers. Head shots on all the groundhogs and one skunk. 10-50 yards. I plink alot and shoot a few pests. Cheaper 177 pellets make it possible. Bigger always seems better, but so far the 177 has done an excellent job.

Guys, remember that you can always do a caliber change yourself if you feel so inclined. It costs under $25.00 bucks.I bought a .177,because of the deal I got,and plan on doing a .22 conversion here shortly. Why not have both?I can tell you that in.177 my Disco has never let me down, and shoots like a laser at 60 yards. It will be fun to note the differences in .22 so i can establish the main caliber for my needs.
