Hey guys Im new here and have a quick question
« on: November 09, 2009, 03:59:43 AM »
Hello everyone,
Ive been shooting airguns on and off since about the age of 10 yrs old. Anyway...Ive recently gotten back into the sport. Ive been shooting a Gamo CFX .177 and a Whisper .177 in my backyard for the last year or so. Recently Ive grown pretty tired of the Whisper's inconsistency, and while I love the accuracy of the CFX Im thinking about jumping up to a .22 this week. I bought the Gamos on a recommendation from a coworker and theyve been pretty decent but not really up to  the standard of what Ive seen from others. I realize that there are probably hundreds of people logging on here asking "which one should I buy" etc. etc. So hopefully this wont be too annoying. Im looking at a few right now but I'd like to get feedback from others who have maybe owned other guns that give me an idea of what to expect.

Right now Im leaning towards the following:

RWS 350P Magnum
Crosman NPSS
Benjamin Superstreak

Anyway, if anyone has any feedback on these other than what Ive read on here over the last 24 hours Id appreciate it. All 3 are somewhat around the $300-ish range, and thats probably where I'll stay for now. Ok, well thanks in advance, hopefully this wont be too annoying. Other recommendations welcome too.
so far:
Benjamin Marauder .22 w/ Leapers 3-9x50
Benjamin Discovery .22 w/ Leapers 3-9x32
RWS 48 .22 w/Leapers 3-9x32 AO
RWS 34P .22 w/ BSA 2-7x32 AO
Xisico B28 .22 w/ Leapers 3-9x50 AO --> sold
Gamo CFX .177 w/ Barska 3-12x40 AO

First off, welcome. Glad to have you aboard. You'll find lot of friendly and VERY helpful folks here.
Now as far as guns, you should get a ton of comments with that one. LOL
Everybody has their favorite and can share info. Look in the Reviews area of the forum for a little more insight into the listed guns. There you can find some interesting evaluations members have posted.
Both of your Gamo guns SHOULD produce fairly accurate results, depending on the ammo you use and also depending on there being NO hidden issues like a bent barrel or a defective scope. Also make sure you swab the heck out of the inside of the barrel to make sure it is clean before attempting to sight in. Are you using a glass or iron sights? What pellets are you using and have you tried a variety of brands and weights? Each individual gun seems to have it's preferences. You have to find the one they like most.
As far as the guns you are debating, I can answer on the Benji Super Streak. I recently bought it and immediately ordered replacement parts, tore the gun down and did a tune job on it. From the box, it needed some major attention. The lubrication from the factory was what I considered less than minimum. The piston seal was defective, again, right from the box and not being shot by me first. The barrel took about 30 minutes of solvent and swabbing to get it reasonably clean.
With all the bad points out of the way, after I replaced and lubed all internals with the recommended moly and reassembled, this is a tack driving .177 air rifle. I also replaced the heavy trigger with a GRT III, the best $32 anybody can spend on an airgun improvement. I like the heavy weight of this gun that absorbs recoil. The long barrel, IMO, results in a more accurate piece. I hunt with Gamo Rockets (9.6gr) and this gun can definately produce a 1 shot 1 kill scenerio. I just contacted Crosman and am ordering a .22 barrel for it also. At $15.65 + s/h I'll have both calibers to tinker with. I like the gun very much and it's very accurate, depending on the handler of course. :)
It DOES need some cleaning and tuning out of the box but hey, MOST guns from the factory do. At least to make them more consistant, more enjoyable to shoot and to definately make them last longer.
Buy a Benji SS if you want a heavy weight accurate powerhouse of an air rifle, but I'd also suggest taking a closer look at the ones you have to see what's really causing the issues. Might start with a chrony test. Hey, if you wanna sell tem, just let us know in the classified section. Could help finance the Benji or the next addition to your arsenal. :)
Happy Shooting!!!!

welcome to the forum matt as u already know many airguns to choose from and some more expensive than the real deal .anyway many choices and i see what you have chosen ,the only one i could speak of is the 350m.22 and its because i own one and very accurate, powerful, but heavy and you need a utg mount so the scope wont move or get unsighted there is a clone called the b28 that is just as good as the rws 350m at(http://www.flying dragons airguns.com) website u could get one tuned already for a very good price and the owners name is mike melick excellent person to deal with but the 350m or b28 r magnum rated which will make u have to practice shootin it cause of the power and hold u have to have on it ,they r not that easy to shoot in the beginning however they make a good airgun, not to many people r happy with there crosman npss, the benji superstreak has a fair reputation big rifle thats all i know.do more homework on your choice and this hobby turns into a addiction so it wont be the first nor the last ..try a rws 34 or panther 34 both r excellent shooters out the box plus trigger is a plus ,many people here will chime in with there opinons which r excellent ones .we have a great bunch of airgunners in this forum and the moderators are good people and will help whenever u need it or go to the library section to the left with green prints .good luck and God bless all of us ....jorge

thanks for your reply...

In my opinion the whisper is pretty good. Its just kind of inconsistent in its groupings. Of course that likely has alot to do with me as well. the CFX has been 100% great from the start. As far as pellets is usually go for the Gamo rockets or the hunters. Ive used some of the heavier RWS pellets too and all have done well in the CFX...except for the tendency to shave off the end of the rockets from time to time. Both guns are well taken care of and kept pretty clean.

I think the whisper is a great gun but its just picky about what I shoot. Im not as particular about velocities and the intricacies of both, mainly because Ive dont have that much time to get into it. (those of us with small children understand that).

Anyway, thanks for your input on the Benjamin. I'm still kind of up in the air on all 3, but I'll likely give in soon.

The TF89 is a great gun. Take a look at this review posted yesterday about the RWS 350 and the TF89.
 http://www.gatewaytoairguns.com/airguns/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=22541#M179504
Plenty of power, GREAT price, and will beat a Gamo hands down any day. Richard (thebookdoc) says, "The TF89 .22 will blow (the RWS 350) away on all fronts with a tune...and at that point the TF will still be a less expensive purchase."
The B28 is virtually the same as the 350, so that would be my second choice.
Also, a tune will make any gun better. And if Gene tunes it, it will make it great! :D

Welcome to the GTA Matt!

What exactly do you mean by "the standard of what I've seen from others?" Do you mean accuracy, shot cycle, fit and finish, something else..? Trying to come up with feedback on .22s for you I keep getting hung up on that phrase and ending up unsure of just what exactly it is in your Gamos that you're not satisfied with and would like to step up in a new .22

Hey thanks for your reply.

To clarify that statement in truth I was really referring to the Whisper. I suppose my opinion is that its accuracy didn't hold up well against an RWS 34 that I was able to shoot not too long ago. Im totally satisfied with the CFX, it has not failed me yet in any way. I suppose I could have worded my original post  differently. That being said I suppose Im just looking for a .22 with good accuracy that doesn't need too much aftermarket stuff. I think you'll know what I mean.

Theres a store nearby that has a Super Streak.  I may buy it and try it for a while, I suppose I can return within 2 weeks if its not working out. Im kind of leaning toward the RWS though. Anyway, thanks for your responses everyone.

A big welcome to the GTA forum and family.  The CFX you have should be an accurate shooter due to it's fixed barrel....the Whisper might be abit light so it jumps.
Of the three choices that you've listed....the SuperStreak might be the one to stay away from....It's big, long, heavy and is harsh while firing.  I believe they still don't have parts for sale for them.  The RWS 350 Magnum is harsh also....but could be tuned.  Some members here have really good results with them.  I've read good things about the Crosman NPSS.....I believe they're still abit new...so no long term shooting reports on them.  Btw, I don't own any of the above three....so no personal experience with them.  Good luck with your next purchase.
Gamo: Expotec .177 + Big Cat .177 + Viper .177 + Whisper .177, Hammerli Titan .177, Diana model 24 .177, RWS-Diana P5 Magnum pistol .177, Crosman: G1 Extreme .177 + Storm XT .177 + Sierra Pro .177 + 1377 pistol .177, Air Arms S410SL .22, BSA Scorpion T10 .22, FX Cyclone .177, Remington Air Master 77 .177 + BB\'s,

Definitely needs some smoothing out fresh from the box. But, if you like a heavy gun to absorb recoil and a long rifle for an accuracy edge, the SS is a descent choice. After tuning mine and adding a GRT III trigger, I really enjoy shooting it. Parts are very easy to get, direct from Crosman, and very cheap. I purchased a new spring, piston with seal, breach seal and breach seal spacers for just over $20 including shipping. Also purchased a .22 barrel assembly today that was $19.65 including shipping. Now I'll have 2  SS rifles in one. Everybody has an opinion of their favorite guns, I like the SS. Definitely not for everyone but works for me.
Happy Shooting....and shopping.

Have you changed the trigger out on your Whisper?  I have a 350, an Air Hawk, and a Whisper.  My Whisper, with GRT III trigger is actually the easiest to shoot and is the most accurate.  It isn't tuned, but it doesn't need to be tuned.  The Air Hawk isn't that good, but it was a refurb that has been upgraded.  I think if I could have done it again, I would have went ahead and bought a "real" RWS 34 instead of the Air Hawk.

My 350 had some problems initially, but it was fixed under warranty.  Right now though it is incredibly accurate.  On the other hand it costs more than the other two put together :)
