HELP : I'm drfting away ............
« on: November 19, 2009, 01:49:51 PM »
It comes and goes . My interest in my airguns is fading . I go through times when my airguns are not the number one priority . Right now, even with winter coming on, my time is being used up on one my other hobbies . Fishing , particularly flyfishing is #1 right now . I have the new kayak and have been looking at canoes and new flyrods . I have a field target match this Saturday and I only practiced one day last week . I almost put a couple of airguns up for sale yesterday and decided to wait . I know I'll come out of it in a few months , so if you don't see me around here , you'll know where I'll be . kirby

To be honest, I think fishing trumps shooting. Heretical, yes.

I confess I have been neglecting my fishing hobby.  And it has been several years since I tied a fly.  I have an 18' ABS BlueHole canoe and a whitewater kayak that I ought to dust off, too.  But I suspect my knee with the blown ACL and a wet exit in rough water might be a disaster.  The canoe, on the other hand, is big enough for my fly rods and a beer cooler.

I had one of the field target guys email me this week and asked what I had been up to , I emailed him back about the fishing and buying a kayak ; he emails me back , saying " fishing huh ; something else to take away your field target money " . I emailed him back that I had been fishing for over 50 years, field target has been taking away my fishing money the last couple of years . LOL kirby  :D

We need to get together for a fishing trip . My favorite fishing is flyrodding for bluegills . kirby

Did some nice still fishing with the kids this past summer. Would have gone into the Fall but school started and they were too busy. I've got a bunch of rods and reels but sometimes I take the old 1950's baitcaster and solid fiberglass rod I fished with when I was a kid. Heck, we even used spincasts for the local cat fish. The KISS principle in action - or maybe that should be inaction. Hard to beat a day on the water.

Jerry is always after me to come visit.  Don't think he is much of a fisherman, but he can cook.  Maybe we need to get a TX trip together and get Ronbeaux and Randall involved, too.

LOL -- just cleaning up in the man cave a couple of weekends ago and ran across my old Quantum open face bait casting reel I used to throw bass plugs with before I got bit by the fly fishing bug.  Maybe I should string her up and pull out some of the old pine wood bass plugs with two sets of trebbled hooks and see if I can still throw 'em without getting a bird's nest.  Used to be pretty good burning 'em in at a low angle under the trees at the edge of the bass ponds.  It's been a long while since I had a large mouth bass over 2 pounds chomp down on a big top water plug.  The trout are usually a bit more discrete.

Hello David,

In my experience hobbyist/ collectors can be very extreme, like you. You put ALL of your energy into a hobby, right to the point that you finish a project or hit a road block, then you move on to the next hobby that catches your fancy. This time Fly Fishing ! This justifies your purchase of the kayak, and offers you a new challenge !

I buy a coin or stamp magazine, or start a woodworking project, this holds my partial attention until it's time to shoot a match. Or when I'm tired of shooting pellets, I load up a bunch of ammo. This keeps my attention until I'm finished loading. Then I go back to my pellet guns :)

I have always fired a few rounds a day, just to keep my eye and finger coordinated. So I'm never that far from my babies :-)

So don't sell the air guns, just wait until you get bored on the long cold winter nights that are coming, and you'll be happy to do a few matches to take your mind off of the winter reruns !

Just my way of seeing our addiction !!!

i too have hobbies
bow hunting
canoeing
ice fishing
airguns
regular hunting
hiking
well with all of these hobbies i always have my "carry" pistol a 14 in bbled 2240 in a holster with a few carts and pellets to shoot
in my tackle box i have a 5 pack of carts and a tin of pellets
and i always throw a few spares in my pocket when in the canoe or hiking or anything
i like nothing more than to be floating down a nice calm stream back in the wood in the canoe and either takin  a red squirrel off alimb or just hitting a water spider or floating leaf
i like to keep my aim up and it always fun to shoot if the fish arent biting

ice fishing i like to set up a snow blind and wait for the crows to take my dead bait  also
even when out snowmobiling i like to beable to hop off if i see a nice thicket that might hold a rabbit or grouse

"Oh, darling! Yes, yes, right there, that's it........mmmmm....... Dang! Did you see that squirrel on the branch outside???? I'll be right back!" What you have isn't a hobby. It's an obsession.

When ever I'm not shooting/tinkering with AG, I'm shooting for these with a light tackle on 10# line mirror lure plastic jig. Takes between 20 to 30 minutes playing so the line don't snap. They feel like pulling a rock when they don't want to get caught. It seems like I get tired before they do most times. :)
