Freaky Whipser????
« on: November 26, 2009, 03:36:03 PM »

Ok guys, help me out here.
My Nephews whisper he just picked up last week has started shooting funny. We both love this rifle but
now something is not right. When we got her last week, we did the normal check over. Stock screws and all tight.
Nothing loose and she was good and clean. We mounted a one piece scope on her with the Gamo 3-9 scope that came with it.
It took me about 15 to 20 shots to get her all dialed in with the .177 CP. In less than 15 minutes we had her dialed in and hitting pennies  at 20 yards. Man this is a great shooting rifle. Very accurate and kinda reminded me of my TX. Now she was not as accurate as the TX but made me think about her. Well the nephew called and said it started shooting all over the place.
He brought it over and I did a once over on her again. No loose screws, just  a slight tightening of the screw in the trigger guard and that was it.  Scope mounts and scope all secure.  Set up another target and couldn't even hit the board at 20 yards.  Figured out where she was going and  dialed it in and was back on target, I though t that was that and then  it went off the target again.
I didnt hear any dieseling but did see some smoke in the breach when I opened her up but nothing bad. I figured it was a busted scope at this point. I took off the scope and tried iron sights. Found and tightened loose rear sites and she seemed to do well for my not so young eyes. I put my leaper swat scope on that was on my tx and zeroed her in but the pellets are all over the place. He said it was never dry fired and nothing has changed. I pulled out the chrony and ran a bunch of shots through it. The .177 cp were going between the 943 to 955 range. I do see some smoke in the breach but like I said, I dont hear the pop of a diesel. The barrel looks clean and all is tight. Just cant get a good grouping. I have no Idea what is going on. I was hitting pennies last week at almost every shot. Now I would be lucky to hit one. I will try cleaning the barrel and see if that helps. I am stumped at this point. I will order the Charlie Trigger and put that on and see if that helps. Was shooting fine without it befor so I dont see how that would have changed.
Any suggestions?????????

Paul.

Like yours, my Gamo scope went early on.

I had already replaced the Gamo trigger with a Tuna trigger. As you know, it makes a world of differance, but gun still wouldn't group consistantly. Figured the gun is still breaking in, and so am I to it.

I replaced the scope with a Leapers mini swat, and an Accushot one-piece mount which made an improvment, but not for long. After a short while it would'nt group consistantly.

I put a gas ram in and didn't check the seal. I assumed that since it was a fairly new gun, the seal was good. In a short time, groups still went back to being inconsistant.

Found the Leapers one-piece mount had a broken stop pin. Made a stronger one, but again, in a short order, the gun went back to being inconsistant.

Finally checked the seal and found a couple of chunks gone from the lip. Replaced the seal with a Maccari, de-burred all inside, gave it a good cleaning, plus used his lube kit, and it's been fine since.

The gun smoked since day one, and while it smoked less with more use, it never realy stopped until after I put the new seal in. Sometimes a bit more smoke than other shots.  This being my first springer, I had no idea what to expect and how long it would take to 'break-in', so I didn't pay much attention to what the smoke meant. The factory seal was probably  going all the while that I was  eliminating other problems.

Now, it's fun to shoot.

Did you try cleaning the barrel?

CPs aren't the cleanest and you may have unevenly leaded the barrel with lead chips.  It is unlikely the crown was damaged because they are protected on the Gamos so I'd go for a cleaning first.

Sometimes when you run a patch through the barrel it may have distorted one of the baffles in the chamber.

I think I would check the seal also. Had a big problem with mine and it turned out to be the seal.

Which seal are you talking about?
The one you see when you open the breach?

I think most of the posters mentioning the seal issue is referring to the piston seal. The one inside the receiver that you'll need to take the airgun apart to see. If you decide to do that....MAKE SURE YOU USE A SPRING COMPRESSOR!!!!!!

Paul,

Sorry, I should have been clearer on that.  As Stanley pointed out, it was the piston seal that was damaged, and yes, you most certainly will need a spring compressor for the Whisper.

Thanks for all the info here guy.
Now, I have never tuned a springer before.
If my seal is what is giving me the problem here, what and from where do I order the needed parts?

Maccari Parts for Gamo

Spring: E-3650   Prod. Code:  E3650   (this is a drop in spring)

Apex Seal:          Prod. Code:  APV 65798

Heavy Tar:          Prod. Code:  LHT432

Moly Paste:           Prod. Code:    MM657

These are the ones that Bob gave me to order for my 177 Whisper.  They all fit but the spring takes some work the first time. It is a bit longer than the one that is in there but aftre it is in it very easy if you have to go in again. You will also need the 100% silicon or some dielectric tune up grease for the seal. Also check up on how to do a tune and it should be fun.

Have you tried different pellets? Your shot deviations looks good from your crony reading and shows being consistent. Ask him if he bear trapped the AG.

If it's shooting at 955 fps, it doesnt sound like a piston seal to me....I'm no expert but it sounds like you're getting compression!

Hello All, been busy with the new job.
I have put the new trigger in it but have not had the time to check it out.
Yea, I thing I am getting plenty of compression.  I did find that I have a
gas ram, which is good, no twang and no tweaking needed. I Like her alot.
Just have to get the accuracy thing worked out. After taking the stock off and putting it back on,
you never know, it may be shooting great now. Its just took dark to go check.

You said you where going to clean the barrel thats your problem cp's are filty pellets and i don't even bother with them if it's gas rammed use kodiaks there killer in my VH shoots 905 fps . I clean my barrels every half a tin and shoot high quality pellets and never have accuracy issues dirty barrel = dirty groups and less kills  .
