I need a good pair of work boots. Any suggestions?
« on: November 29, 2009, 03:45:41 PM »
I've been wearing 5.11 Tactical sidezip duty boots for the last 3 years or so now at work. For every day I've been wearing Converse 9" side Zip duty boots for maybe the last 4 or 5 years.

I like the Converse, but they're not rugged enough for where I work. They start falling apart after 6 or 7 months. I'm on my feet ALL day. I walk through water, oil puddles , glass, wood piles...You name it. I've pretty much walked through or over it. LOTS of vertical ladder climbing, lots of stairs and miles of concrete. I'm also welding & burning half the time and the Converse are half ballistic nylon. So they catch fire pretty easily. Ain't nothin like a piece of red hot slag skippin round inside your boot!

The 5.11's are pretty good, but I've developed a pretty bad case of plantar faciitis over the years. The flat footbed in these boots doesn't agree with me too much lately. Insoles are out of the question here too. The safety toe is kinda small, even with the factory insoles removed.

I'm looking for something water proof (or resistant at least!), at least 8 inch uppers (taller is better!) , LIGHT, all day comfortable, resists sparks, slag and torch spray. Enough flexibility that I can free climb structures with.

I've been thinkin about getting a pair of Timberland PRO boots at the working persons store:
http://workingperson.com/products/22_359_25/1/7224/Timberland_PRO_53523_Black_8_inch_Steel_Toe_Boots.html

Anyone have any experiences with these boots? Or recommend anything?

I've tried a few. None seemed to last any longer than what you said. My Redwings were the same. I was talking about boots the other day, and I have to say, my old combat boots were the longest lasting boots I've ever owned. Now I just wear Herman Survivors. They last as long as the rest, and only cost $30-40.Good luck on your search.

I agree. My old combat boots lasted the longest too. But my old Altamas aren't safety toe and my job requires safety boots. So they're out.

For what it's worth.

I've got  Timberland  'Sport' boots that I've had for five years now. They are my warm weather hunting boots, and my winter work boots  where I'm on my feet all day in the garage and out in rain and snow. They've had weld spatter, paint thinner, toe scuffs from working kneeling, and any other auto related crap  on them and they've held up great.  Garrenteed waterproof for life and not one leak yet when standing in puddles. They have held up very well and  look almost new dispite what I've put them through.

However, the down side for you is that these sport boots are not steel toe. And, because I have flat feet, these have very little arch in them. Some of the other Timberlands boots and work shoes also don't have much arch. But, these are the most comfortable boots I've ever owned.

To save them for hunting, I recently went looking for new work shoes.  I couldn't find a Timberland work shoe that had a tread that wouldn't pick up gravel from the diveway so I got  Chippewa work shoes.

The Chippewas  also have very little arch, are  steel toe, and they feel like cinderblocks compared to my Timberlands.

PS, These Timberlands have lasted longer than all my issued, and last-pair PX bought jungle boots, but those were 70's era boots.   :D

Have you checked out Georgia Boot Company?  My son wears a model known as a Mud Boot.   These are very well made boots for the person that has to wear boots everyday to make a living.   These boots have been the only boots to hold up and  have outlasted all other well known brands.   My son by them, not at them.

Good Luck with your search.

Sam,
One of our divisions here is distributors for Fire & Rescue equipment. Sounds like your work enviornment is similar to that. Climbing ladders, stomping through oil, glass& water and dealing with fire or hot objects. We carry a few different boots but two that fit what you describe are the Thorogood 8" duty boot and the Globe 8" duty boot. Two different price ranges also. Thorogood run around $70-80 and the Globe about $220. I went out and looked at them in the shop. Both are lace up and side zipper. Thorogood has ballistic fire retardant fabric sides and the Globe is solid leather. Both have steel toe and shank. Both have the special anti-chemical soles. Globe hasremovable insoles and also has a moisture wick lining. They look really stout and comfortable. They better be at that price. :)
I'm the network administrator (not a sales guy) but can hook you up if you need some info sent. We have brochures available. You can shoot me an email if either of these sound like what you need. I'm sure these have very good warranties also.I canscan the brochures and just email them if you want.
