Recon Woes
« on: March 23, 2007, 10:06:14 AM »
Hello Guy's,,I want to talk about the "Recon" from Gamo.I recently bought one from Lebaron's here in Toronto,Mostly because of the looks, and something my wife could handle, out of the box, boy was I un-impressed,,then after I put 100 rnds through it, I wanted to toss it in the can,,groupings changed with every new pellet that I tried, one grouping for "Crosman SuperPoints", another for "Gamo Magnums, another for"Beeman Laser's", and so-on.,and it was LOUD even taking into account the synth,. stock, way too loud.,So, I decided to tune it with the services of a local guy named "AirBuddy",(the biggest mistake I have ever made,,aside from buying the recon in the first place),this knob says that he de-burred,polished,spaced the original spring,,de-burred, polished, and weighted the piston,,added thrust washers,,de-burred, and polished the slots in the receiver,,lubricated, and adjusted the trigger, and added 4 lubes,,He said the M/V was 443fps before the tune, and 540fps after the tune.(all this for 50 bucks),,when I got it home, and actually fired off a couple of rnds,The bloody thing was twice as loud as before the tune, groupings were all over the place(even worse than before the tune) and it wanted to almost twist out of my hand after you fired a pellet,Now, my wife doesn't even want to be in the same room as the @#$%!@&)# thing. If anyone has any suggestions on what I can do with this gun, I would really like to hear about it,,Thanks Guy's,,Andy.

P.S.,,,,If I didn't get screwed,,,,why does my bum hurt so much,,,,LOL.

Hey Andy, and welcome to GTA...the best airgun forum on the net. I feel for you dood. My suggestion to you is to check the Library out and absorb all the info here on pellet choices, shooting positions, and anything that might pertain to your problems. Chances are you will find a fix for your airgun blues. I am sure the other members will also send you in the right direction to your problem as well.

Patience is a virtue in this world. A new air gun needs time to break in. Spring piston rifles usually need 1000 rounds to start to become consitantly accurate. As far as the tune you recieved,....I do not know this person. Maybe someone else does. But hang in there, and keep shooting that rifle. I will bet that it will come around. If you can, send Chalie Da Tuna any info you can on the mod that was done to the rifle. He may be able to give you more info on any problems that you have with the rifle. He is the THE top notch airgun mod person and moderator here on GTA. Good luck.

Greg

Hey Andy........

Not to say the guy did a nasty job on your Cadet but there is this saying we all use..... hehe..........  " You get what you paid for"..  That is alot of work done on a gun that sounds like detination woes etc.. But you never know.. Stick with it and keep shooting it till all the excess lube is outa there.. A 1000 pellets later will tell you if you got a keeper or not..:)

I have done two of the little Recons for customers and both came out sweet little rifles. I took three coils of a couple of used tarantula springs and made guides and a new top hat for them and the one  rifle shoots 7.9's at 580's and the other which is a milder version still gets 7.9's out the tube in the 560's. Both rifles were so quiet after the tune I was amazed at them, I swear you could shoot them in the back yard and nobody would hear them 30 feet away.
Maybe yours is so loud that the breach seal is leaking, if the seal is bad the rifle will be really loud and shoot lousy.

My Recon was pretty bad for about the first 700 pels or so, then it settled down. The trigger is horrible, but I will be sending my 8$ to Peterdragin pretty quick for one of his inserts. My S1K was disappointing too, until I had CDT do one of his tunes and triggers. A whole different gun.

Fearless,

Please tone the profanity down. There are youngsters that read this forum and I don't like to hear it myself. Thanks and best of luck...
