i haven't looked for a job in 28 years.....
« on: November 30, 2009, 12:25:13 PM »
i have been self-employed for the past 28 years but it is catching up with this old body now.  i just can't handle the aches and pains of manual labor day-in and day-out like i use to.  today was the first time in 28 years that i have interviewed for a job.  it was kinda funny sitting on "the other side" of the table.  we'll see what happens but i think it went well.  it is  a government job and i met all the requirements except the "diversity" portion.  seems that affirmative action plays a big role in who gets these jobs as they have to meet "quotas" from the department of labor on diversity.  why can't they just accept someone who has the education and work experience and throw all the political crap out the window?  this job would be a blessing and i could stop killing myself doing manual labor 6 days a week/14 hours per day!.......ya'll keep your fingers (and toes) crossed for me!!!!

A sure way guide  to meet the affirmative action criteria.

1. Tell them you love spaghetti, fried chicken, tacos, lamb and southern cooking.
2. Tell them your red white  black or blue depending on your current health or weather conditions.
3. You believe in Alla, Jehovah, Jesus and all 33 million Hindu gods (However, you just cant name them all right off the bat.)
4. Your *_*_*_*_*_*ual preference, often.

That should cover all the bases.
Good luck.

Don't get me started on that. Back when I lived in Maine, which has never recovered from the 1920's depression, - I decided to bid on a mail delivery contract. This was between cities/towns etc. - there was a lot of bs in the bidding to begin with, but when I got to the "affirmative action" section, - it was more than I could handle. Without saying so directly, - you HAD to pass over qualified people, if "someone" applied who was on "the list". - I refused to sign off - and of course, no contract.
.
Actually I can take that one step further. Back in the 70"s the Small Business Administration" started it's version of the same thing. Silly me, not realizing that ... In any case I was running off-shore deep sea fishing and whale watching trips out of Newburyport, Mass. - for a company that owned four boats, about 62 ft. to 84 ft.at the time. ... I was interested in starting a small operation on my own. I found a decent boat, and down on Plum Island an outfit that had a good dock, and large parking lot. We worked out a deal, - X amount plus a percentage of the gross, pretty standard. - Now I needed to raise a "few bucks" ... no bank will foot that alone. -
.
Bingo, call the Small Business Administration" and see about backing, - they don't actually put in a dime. Sooo, I gave their Boston office a call. Ran the plan/idea past the guy - he loved it!!! ... Told me that's exactly what they were looking for, but couldn't help me. - He said "if you repeat this, I'll deny it" - "but I can tell by talking to you, you're the wrong color".

Boy Roger!!! I worked for someone for over 24 years and then went out on my own.. After winding down like you have, I went back to the job market at age 50 looking for work. It was tough because not only is your age a factor, but employer's want youth as well..:) . Competing against minorities for job placement is really an ego killer for us white folk..:) One of the last jobs I acquired was working for a large firm as a Webmaster. I was one of 2 other white folk that worked there and I got my come up ins with racial prejudice with all the co workers. I was treated as a low life nobody and the only reason I was able to keep my job was that I had all the qualifications that they required and then some. Was hired because the person I took his place had to leave for Vietnam on an emergency extended leave.

I worked there for over 3 years before they finally found a person that had the qualifications that would fill my shoes..:(  Money was fantastic but daily life dealing with constant prejudice was miserable.

Roger ,Good luck my friend "Affirmative Action" is a beeyotch!!!! I watched it fail for thirty yrs and it's still failing.I've seen people promoted over better qualified people based on the "Quota Need" it's sickening to say the least.
