What is best oil for air chamber lube?
« on: December 04, 2009, 08:18:45 AM »
I have seen several ideas on how to lube the air chamber in an air rifle. Can anyone tell me what is best to use?  Is the Crosman Scilicone oil anygood or should I use somthing else. Where do I get any of it?

My local Big 5 store only has hoppe's gun oil.

I have a Crosman Quest 1000 I want to clean up.

Do not lube your chamber with any lubes unless you know for sure it has a leather seal. Oil and compression = combustion and heat which will distroy a synthetic seal and spring.

If you do have a leather seal there i a proper way to lube it through the chamber.

As I said, the gun I am working on is a new Crosman Quest 1000 I assume the seal is a neoprene seal.

Any ideas that you have seen regarding lubes in the compression chamber is a bad idea unless it is a gun with a leather seal and even then, there is a proper procedure and proper lubes for that application. And the Quest does use a synthetic seal as does almost all airguns made in recent years.

So, you are telling me to never put any oil or molly lube of anykind on the seal or in the chamber of this rifle!

By the way, I did order a GRT-111 trigger from you. Can hardly wait to get it.

No, what I'm saying is that you should never introduce any lubes into the compression chamber via the port. Also, no oil should be introduced into the action through the cocking slot onto the spring or piston as it will migrate to and past the seal causing excessive dieseling and possibly even heavy detonation which is of course hard on the spring as well as the seal.

If lubed properly, the lube, either Moly or Dielectric Silicone grease (no oil) is applied to the edges of the seal while being assembled during the tune. The chamber wall is lubed with a very fine film of lube (not moly) as part of the assembly process.
