Loud Shadow Sport

Not sure if this is new to anyone here but I found a way to muffle some of the racket my Shadow Sport has been making. I took the buttpad off of the gun expecting to find the stock full of expanding foam like on some of my centerfire rifles with composite stocks. Nothing, just a giant hollow cavity that I suspect was functioning like an echo chamber.
I took some Durham's water putty (kind of like plaster of paris) and poured a batch into the stock. Why didn't I use expanding foam? I wanted to add a little weight to the stock as well.
I wouldn't suggest filling the entire cavity or else your rifle would be entirely to butt-heavy.
I let this set overnight and tested it this morning. Gun was quieter yet still louder than what I had hoped for. I noticed upon cocking the gun that there was a little rattle going on around the pistol grip area. I suspected that some of the putty had come loose and was flopping around in the stock. There was nothing to do other than chip out all of the putty so I just ignored the sound.
I noticed some smudges on my scopes eyepiece and while cleaning it I noticed that the eyepiece lens felt loose. I managed to tighten the lens and viola...silent but deadly.
I can't say exactly  how much quieter the gun is now but it has been toned down considerably. It is amazing to me how much noise resulted from the loose lens.
The weight of the water putty also significantly reduced the recoil and vibration as well.
Sorry for the ramble but maybe someone will find this of interest.

Hmmm, a few of us use the memory foam, it work's great and you can add or subtract without having to dig it out. Might want to give it a try, no mess. :) Ed

How much weight will memory foam add? That was one of my goals with my redneck mod. Also where do you get memory foam? I don't know if I want to buy a thirty-dollar pillow in order to get a few small chunks.

There must be alot of rednecks around this forum......... hehe.. Quite a few of us use the memory foam. You can buy it a a yardage store in a bag. It comes in small pieces.. Pack the stock as tight as you want.. It does add weight to the stock.. Regular expanding foam does not add as much weight.. The memory foam is much more dense.. I have 4 S1K's and a CFX synthetic that I have used the memory foam on and it works great for ballance as well as deading the recoil and noise..

Good luck

Mike, you can get it at most craft store's or go to a bed outlet, a lot of time's they have scrap's that you can get. Weight, you can stuff quite a bit in there and you would have to fill and find what feel's comfortable for you. Maby stuff a weighted object in with the memory foam for extra balance. some of the other member's got some local's where they get their memory foam, what do you say guy's.? Ed

Hey you guys, that memory foam is great stuff.

Finally managed to dig out all of the now-hardened water putty. Tip: if you ever find yourself engaging in a half-baked idea, go do something else for a while.

Or you can use the search feature on GTA and save yourself a nightmare's worth of trouble.

You live and you learn right?

Anyway, the putty is out and the foam is in.

Thanks guys,
 "Dookie"

Actually it wasn't too difficult to track  down.

My wife had purchased some m/f pillows a while back and they're in the guest bedroom and don't tell her, heeheehee...

No she won't flip out. After trying them out we decided to go back to conventional pillows. I honestly thought she got rid of them. So, here we are at the "Lobby of Hobbies", and she asks me why I want memory foam. I tell her and get this...She says "just use one of the pillows in the guestbedroom."

I couldn't make up stuff like this if I wanted to.

The truth as they say is sometimes stranger than fiction. Huh!
