what other mods to Whisper w/ Nitro Piston and GRT III?
« on: December 07, 2009, 05:13:21 PM »
I just ordered a .22 Whisper w/ Nitro Piston from PA and I also ordered the GRT III trigger from CharlieDaTuna.

Are there any other worthwhile upgrades or mods to this gun, besides optics of course?  Is there any tuning at all that can be done with a Nitro piston?

I am new to airgunning, but I am a bit of a gun nut and love working on and modding my firearms.  I live in a heavily populated area and need to do some pest control which is why I just bought the whisper.  It should be here in a few days.

Well, you could adjust the weight in the hollow stock to make it balance better. I'm not sure if a whisper will still twang with a gas ram, but the filling the hollow with a rag, or some expanding foam normally helps to keep the rifle quieter. I've got a .22 whisper without the gas ram, and she's quiet, and dead on.

I agree with Randy.  Fill the stock voids.

No more twang or torque, but the piston hitting home still makes a sharp noise with a gas ram. Filling the void in the butt helps absorb some of the sound.

With the gas ram, you may find the gun prefers heavier pellets.

As far as any tuning, deburring and replacing the seal with a better one may be one thing you'll want to check on. My Whisper had a bad seal early on. Swapping to a gas ram made the seal worse, faster. Chaised my tail around wondering why the groups were getting worse until I replaced it. Now it's great.

You may find a cheek pad helps you get a good cheek weld so your eye stays aligned with a scope.

Get a good, strong one-piece scope mount and clean and locktite the screws, plus the rail.

With a compact scope and mount the guns is 7-1/2 pounds. You may want a sling if you ever use it for more than just yard pest control.

Good luck with it.

just shoot it.... tune your shooting skills until it becomes second nature. practice your cheek weld, your linear trigger pull, the point of contact of your rifle so you hold it exactly the same all the time, and your reticle positionat different impact points... become surgical with it. it is an incredible rifle. my Csi is almost instinctual...  I have shot it so much that i became very familiar with range finding and mil dot placement. just enjoy it...
