no smoking.....
« on: March 25, 2007, 09:54:44 AM »
...I know this is an airgun forum, but you guys are my friends, so I figured I could ask this here.  It's been nearly 3 months since I quit smoking, and still sitting in my own house, where no-one has ever smoked  (I never smoked inside) I'll get a craving once in awhile where I swear I can smell smoke.  For you guys that have successfully quit smoking, does this ever go away?  I would have thought after 3 months I'd be home free, but man I still wanna smoke all the time.  Still haven't even cheated once btw, not one puff.....

Congratulations, Dan, way to go!  As someone who's been there not that long ago, I know exactly how you feel.  And how hard it is.  To answer your question, yes, it does go away.  In fact, a time will come where cigarette smoke will just be irritating, instead of a trigger.  Bad news is, you're probably at least 3 month from that time :-(!  But you ARE past the hardest part, the physical addiction and the cravings that go iwth it.  Now it's mostly psychological, all the little triggers that said "Smoke Time!".  You know the ones, get in the car, light up, after dinner, light up, cup of coffee or a beer, light up.  This is the habit part of smoking, and for some, it's actually tougher than the physical addiction.  Bottom line is, no one ever quit until they were ready too.  That's the only reason I can think of for my success.  I quit at New Years, and around here, that means NOTHING to do to take the place of the butts.  But I was ready, so it worked.  That's been 5 or 6 years now.  So hang in there, and keep doing what you're doing, cause apparently it's working.  And if you just want someone to shoot the breeeze with, my number is 509-997-7271.  Later.

Dave

Great job Dan! I assume that the pic is your son, good lookin' young man you must be proud. That alone is a good reason to quit. I quit over a year ago, but I'm still chewing nicorette. now the smell really irritates me but I know if I were to ever have just one I could be back to 2 packs a day. so drink plenty of water, stay away from people that smoke, and situations that tempt you. Its worth it keep up the good work.

Gongratulations Dan !!!!!!!

As a smoker that has quit twice, U are over the HUMP !

All you have to do is think of is an OUTSTANDING AIR RIFLE that you WILL get with the money that you are saving !!!

That worked for me the first time..., But it was a pistol.

Anyway I QUIT !  The BIGGEST reason to quit, is your FAMILY, and YOUR HEALTH !!!!!

Keep up the GREAT WORK !!

Congratulations, Dan, this is the best thing you have ever done to your life!
Depending on how long and how much you smoked before, it could take a while.
my Dad always said "the devil finds work for idle hands" the trick that worked for me
was to keep busy. I haven't smoked in over 8 years now..... and every now and again
man I tell you, I could just pick up a smoke and suck it down   :)
But as time passes, it becomes easier and easier to resist. Just remind yourself how
hard it was to get to where you are now... it's never worth going through all that again.
Stick with it. good move.

I still use tobacco, but I'll tell you I quit alot harder stuff(illegal). I can't say much more than what you've read from others.

I can still smell, taste, hear things I haven't been around in years.

The only good news is: the longer you resist temptation, the fewer and more far between these cravings get. There will come a point when you will experience what you're going through now and you'll want to laugh at it.

Hang in there, I don't know what your reason for quitting is, but it's a good enough reason to get you this far. You're there, just ride out those little moments and notice how they get less and less frequent as time goes on. That should be your yardstick.

I quit counting days, weeks and months a while back. I just thank God everyday that I'm not who I used to be.

Congratulations!

Will power, Dan! Hang in there, Just remember, you WANT to quit.Once you've made that decision, you can break any habit. My parents both quit cold turkey after 20 years and it took them 6 months until they had no desire, but even now, 30 years later, my Dad says he can taste it sometimes, but the smell disgusts him. It's really opened up the door for different foods for him; being German, he was a meat and potatoes man and didn't like the taste of other foods. Since quitting, he says everything tastes better.

My sister-in-law cut down to one a day when she was pregnant, but she lived for that one. Bad news. She knows she should quit, but 24 years later doesn't want to bad enough to put up with it. YOU Can DO IT! Think about all the extra AIRGUN MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!YAAAAAAAAAAA

Dan,  I haven't had a cigarette for 5 years now and every once in a while I still get a sudden over powering urge to have one.  It's usually after a meal, or especially after a beer.  It only happens once in a while but it really freaks me out when it happens.  Good thing the craving goes away as quickly as it came.  Hang in there, if you've gone this long then you can lick this thing forever.  You should be proud of your accomplishment !!  Quitting smoking is one of the hardest things to do.

After reading all of these replies I was so depressed I went and smoked 16 packs........some friends you are........JUST KIDDING!!!!!!

Really it has been hard, and some days I think I will have "just 1" to make the craving more bearable.  I quit several years ago for almost 2 years, then every once in awhile at work I would have "just 1", and slowly "just 1" was 2 packs a day again.  I am 35 and have smoked fairly heavy since I was 13 years old, it's "what I do".  My oldest son who is 11 really bugged me and was hurt by me smoking, he was very worried for my health.  That more than anything really got to me until I gave it up again....especially since he is getting close to the age when I started.

Anyways, I made it another day today and it's almost bedtime, so I think I'm over it until tomorrow:)  Thanks guys,

Dan

Congrats  DanoInTx.  New to forum and wanted to pitch in my two cents.  I used to be a former smoker my self but quit to health issues, mainly testicular cancer.  Have been smoke free and cancer free for the last six years now.
