DARWIN AWARD CANDIDATE
« on: December 18, 2009, 05:10:50 AM »

Guys and gals don't try this!!!!

Long story short....I cut open a shotgun shell and dumped all the shot and gunpowder out and then taped the shell to a phonebook with the end/primer pointed out. Then I shot the end with a pellet from my Gamo Big Cat....causing a big bang and abit of flames. The BAD part was that the pellet flew back towards me and hit my wrist!!!!! Imagine if my hand wasn't at the forestock....the pellet could've hit my neck or if abit higher (4") my face or eye. I did wore glasses for this experiment..... You can see from the shotgun shell photo below that I hit it at the 7 o'clock position....if I had hit it dead center....maybe the injury would be at a more important part of my body!!!!! The pellet broke the skin and caused a dimple in the flesh....there was abit of swelling around the wound. Let the ribbing begin......

I had done this a few times at the outdoor gun range.....but that was at 30 and 40 yard distances.

Rifle: Gamo Big Cat

Glad to hear you weren't hurt Stanley !!!  Looks like the primer cap (and possably the anvil) flew out too.

Shotgun primers are about the biggest  and most powerful in the world of powder burners.  And some are "magnum" rated with even more force than standard shotgun primers. Just the force of the primer alone is enough to drive 1-1/8 ounce of shot, plus the wad well over 20 yards. Up close, they can do some VERY serious damage and should not be "experimented" with !!!!!

I reload for all my 12 and 20 ga trap and skeet shooting. I've fired off some damaged hulls, or porly pressed in primers, but no powder, just to safe them so I can throw the empty hulls in the trash.  Firing  just the primer, no powder, there is still some flame  and occationally bits of primer that comes out the muzzel of a 28 inch long 12 ga barrel.

If anyone feels like playing  around with firearm primers, first make sure you have someone standing by with a battle dressing and  be ready to drive you to the emergency room.

stanley,
It looks like part of the primmer is missing. Is it possible that is what hit you when it blew back?

This is some serious stuff but North Pack, I almost rolled on the floor when you said Good Shot. It just hit me in a funny way. Guess I have a stupid sense of humor. Gamo, glad you didn't get hurt seriously.

Thanks guys.....now that Paul mention it....it could very possibly be the primer that hit me.  I found a piece of flattened pellet on a shelf about 3 meters in front of where I was sitting when I shot the Big Cat.  I'll look for the primer because I heard a "Tick" behind and to the right of me after it hit my wrist.  Can't see it quite clearly in the shotgun shell photo but the pointy thing is there...where the primer used to be.

Btw....I was going to tap the shell with a hammer and nail before thinking of using a pellet gun.  I changed my mind because I felt I was too close to the shell.  I didn't know primers were so explosive!!!!!   Experiment was called; Who can shoot out an eye before that kid in "Christmas Story".  heh heh

I have a scar in my forehead from placing a .22 gartridge w/ powder no bullet on a fence post and shooting it with a bb gun when i was about 12 yrs old. Casing flipped back when it went off and stuck in my forehead.

Found it.....and yes, it was the primer (Looks like a cap in gold/brass colour) that hit me.

Since Tn.Reb brought up .22lr cartridges.....

.22lr fun:  A long time ago one of my friends went camping with his buddies, and sitting around the campfire drinking beer, they started tossing in .22lr cartridges into it.  What fun when the cartridges exploded and causing the embers to fly off heh heh.....that is before one of the bullets hit my friend in the wrist.  Camp trip was over....they had to bring him to a hospital.  Guess beer, fire and bullets don't mix......

Beer, fire and bullets mix just fine but I think the order of placement is VERY important.lol I think it must go: shoot the bullets, build the fire then drink the beer.
