Will a turbo tune help a TechForce 89?
« on: December 19, 2009, 04:28:22 AM »
With all the comments on this rifle I would like to know if one would get more power and/or more consistent power from a Tech Force 89 with a Turbo Tune? What difference would we see in having it done?

Most of the commentary on this model are positive. Even more so in light of its low cost and apparent power and reliability. Seems with a major tune like this it would still be a real bargain and worth getting for many.

I am getting mine Turbo'd. You can ask Richard/thebookdoc about his. He got his .177 done and  I think his .22.

Pretty much any air rifle can benefit from a tune, and the 89 is no exception.

To address your question specifically, I know some of the last few people to post the results of their Turbo Tunes on TF89s have gotten increased power. But I'm uncomfortable making a blanket statement that the Turbo Tune will increase the gun's power if you get it. I think the only person who can answer that definitively is Gene himself; he knows how they've all collectively turned out and what springs he's using etc. For now I'm just inclined to quote his website:

"...please keep in mind, no two guns are the same coming                    off the line, or tuned by the same tuner, have the same                    power and consistency. Secondly, power should not be the                    primary concern, although important. If it's tuned and                    comes out extra strong, that’s fine as long as it fires                    smooth and is consistent. If not, it should be                    “de-tuned” a little. They don't all turn out to be                    monsters, but most turn out real well."

To address the other part of your question about power, yes, a Turbo Tune should make the power more consistent, as doing so is one of the primary objectives of his tunes.

I suggest just browing around his site  for awhile and reading about what he does  and why.

My personal experience with Gene was getting my B28A tuned, and muzzlebraked, and it came out beautiful and shooting with a much better shot cycle. It was also slightly more powerful, but even if it had come back 2 or 3 foot pounds less I wouldn't mind because the gun's cocking and firing behavior are just so much better all around.

Again, I'm sure some TF89 owners will chime in and you can make some inferences from what they have to say, but I really think it's only Gene himself who can tell what you can count on getting and what you can expect.

Absolutely and you will notice a big difference in the way she performs. I have a Contender Series TF Model 59 that was tuned by Gene and she's one smooth shooter. This shooter makes a perfect target shooter and small game, very accurate and take notice of the Golden Trigger :o she's one of a kind. :) Ed

Gene tuned my TF89 .177 and it went from about 860FPS to 940FPS. The gun clearly had a few issues when I sent it. However, when it came back it was a much better shooter by far than it had ever been. Recoil reduced as well as torque. The trigger difference was, in a word, amazing. I had to get used to the gun all over again. New spring, spring guide, trigger tune, muzzle brake... improved accuracy, ease of cocking, and consistency. It was so good I didn't hesitate to send a new TF89 .22 for the tune when I got it, even though it was very nice out of the box -- you can see the stats in my signature. I'm betting it'll gain a few FPE, but if it doesn't, it doesn't matter. If it does, it'll be a real powehouse. but it is more important to reduce the recoil, improve accuracy (it was .25 @ 10 yards for me out of the box). it will be the base of a custom project, and for me the tune was DEFINITELY worth it.

I'm alittle late on this but to help answer your questions about the TF89, I have several of them and to be honest I've not gotten one out of the box that has been perfect they all need tuned! in one form or another. I've had some with good triggers some that needed work some that shoot smooth but not perfect, so be prepared to either work on it yourself or have someone do it who knows what thier doing but when its all said an done you'll end up with a good gun.

It's never too late to a bring up a good point and Mark certainly has. Chinese quality control can be spotty at times. A tune using custom parts (like Gene's) takes Chinese QC out of the equation entirely.

Anyone with more info on putting a Lothar Walther barrel on the TF89? After reading of it being done on Marauders and one post mentionint on these rifles, what is actually involved and who would be the right tuner/gunsmith to do the job right?

Just to chime in a bit.  I really believe the TF 89s have better QC than most of the other Chineese gun with those innards.  Mine is a gazillion times better than my Hammerli Titan.  I wish I had paid the $40 difference and got another Contender.
