Can't find Neatsfoot Oil can I use Mink Oil?

Hello GtA,I'm new to the forum and thought that I would post my first question. I have been to every shoe store in my city and with no luck have I found any Neatsfoot Oil but the sales people all tell me that Mink oil is the same thing. I have a old b3 with a leather seal that needs to be oil bad. I quess may question is this: Can Mink oil be used instead of Neatsfoot OIl?

I bought my Neatsfoot oil on Amazon.com. I just did a search and bought from a reputable dealer...very inexpensive in my opinion.

As to if Mink oil and neatsfoot oil are the same...no they are not. Neatsfoot oil is made from the shinbones and feet from cattle. Mink oil is made from the thick fatty layer that minks have just under their skin. However, they both can be used to soften/waterproof/preserve leather. Surely, if mink oil could be used in our airgunning applications, then it would have been mentioned a long time ago...so if the recipe calls for neatsfoot oil, then thats what we use.

You should be able to find neatsfoot oil at Lowes, Home Depot, etc. Look in the paint and cleanning supplies sections. tjk

The Neetsfoot oil need's to be mixed with delectric lube, the stuff for spark plug boot's etc. 1 part neetsfoot oil 3 part's delectric lube. Mix em together real good then soak the leather seal in it for several hours. Wipe the excess off the seal and install. I've been using this mixture on all my B3's with leather seals.Ed

Other places for neetsfoot oil are Tractor Suppy Company, or most any place with equine supplies, for use on saddles and such.

I bought mine at the Tractor Supply store locally, but I could have also got it at the Army/Navy store.  At the Army/Navy store, it comes in plain quart sized paint cans with typical military labeling.

Usually any good hardware store should have it.  I know all the hardware stores around me stock it, even the little "mom and pop" stores.

Not sure why Chinese rifles are any different from others with leather seals, but most owners recommend silicone oil. It does have to be pure. A good source would be a hobby shop which sells it for RV car shocks. I have a spray can which I picked up from a local hardware store. It will rejuvenate the seal plus has a very high flash point so you don't get dieseling. On a low powered springer, I've even seen regular oil recommended as a little dieseling is supposed to be normal (per the Cardews' book) for this type of gun. Anyway, you can use silicone oil for a lot more other things than mink oil.

finally I was able to found the Neatsfoot, It took me going to several hardware stores, several tractor suplies, and even the army & naval store in my area, but I finally got the got it!!!! Thanks to everyone for the help . HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

Compasseco has said to put veggy oil in my tf97??

I need something to give it a extra boost! That the super Tune ? didnot  do.

It's so week (just a guess) The fps is about 350-400!..

You can order " 100 % Silicone Shock Oil" on Amazon.com  ,, that's where I ordered mine.  Mix that with neatsfoot oil  (the correct mixture amount is listed in the GTA Library) and you have the perfect mixture to soak your leather seals in to recondition them.    The mixture works great.  You can also put just a drop of it into the cylinder chamber every once in a while when the leather piston needs it.

Jeff, I went on Amazon to buy some 100% silicone shock oil. But there are so many weights to choose from. So I thought that maybe the weight is specified in the GTA library. The weight is specified in the document called "all about lubricants", and also the formula for mixing silicone and neatsfoot oil. As per the document, 30wt is specified.

The closest I can come to 30wt is 50 or 40, on Amazon. Does it really matter that much about the 30wt, or can a substitute weight be used?

Coleman sells tubes of it, about the size of a Crosman pellgunoil tube. It's for lubing/conditioning older Coleman lanterns/stoves/lamps/irons/etc, that use leather seals.

Any hobby shop that sells RC cars should carry it. I have some 60w. Need to get some 30w. The 60w has worked well as an o-ring lube, so far.
