newbie question
« on: January 18, 2010, 01:21:29 PM »
what is a suitable range to sight in a 4x fixed power scope on 1000fps?  Average shot is from 10 yards - 125 yards. most common target is Common Grackle, or Red Wing Blackbird!

this is the problem... it varies bird to bird, as well as barn length (rock doves)

First off, welcome to GTA Forums. Glad to have you aboard.

Secondly, for humaine AG kills, you need to keep it under 50 yards. Personally, I sight my guns in at 25-30 yards since that is the average rangeI try to make my shots.

Welcome again.

Happy Shooting!!!!

thank you for the welcome! I am willing to shoot out to 125 with a full rest, haven't tried with my new Hammerli Titan but a with Diana 34 I got a head shot on a redwing, 125y 5x optical zoom. I think a lot of luck was involved!

I bought it last week at Bass Pro, got a smokin deal beacause I told them it's a 2.5 hour drive and they didn't have a remington vantage they could sell me (6 in stock all on rain check) No tax + 2 tins of pellets. The Crosman ultra Magnum 10.5's are hard on the shoulder for a .177, not the worst recoil just unexpected!

I usually sight my springers in for 25-30 yards.  I try to keep my shots at 40 yards or less for hunting and that sight in distance works well for me.

Hey no lak, a big welcome to the GTA forum and family.  Great to see another Canuck on this forum.  If you bought that Titan at Bass Pro in Ontario...I would think it would be from the city of Vaughan.  As most of the posters above mentioned......I also sight in for 40 yards.....and then adjust accordingly for longer or shorter distances (Bringing the aim point higher or lower at a critter).
I've shot at a softdrink can at 100 yards with my .177 Gamo Big Cat and made a hole in it...and dented the other side a little bit.  I tried that with a soup can (Thicker tin) and it only dented the first layer.  My Titan is more powerful.....maybe it'll put a hole in the soup can....but I haven't tried.  For a spring piston airgun....I think staying under 70 yards would give you a better/cleaner kill.  Although I did kill a Starling at 63 yards with my Gamo Viper......body shot.

I find it to be a great gun.. shooting in my backyard 20yards, I hold 1" groups freehand (guns only a week od). I do have other air guns but this is by far the most powerful I have. I am not a fan of the Crosman Quest 1000, as I have fired it a million times (next door)... my neighbor and I are  both avid hunters (big game, small game, varmint, turkey) so we use .177 to keep our eye's and trigger finger working well.

I think the .177 Titansare one of the most powerful spring piston air rifles....right up there with some of the Beemans (Forget which models..maybe the 1000), Tech Force 89 (Practically the same guns). I think some of the Hatsans, RWS Dianasand Walter Falcon Hunters are about 120fps faster.

I bought a chronograph last summer and had a chance to check the speed of some pellets with the Titan. Of course most manufacterers advertise some of their airguns as "1000"fps airguns.....well, the Titan is really a 1000+fps air rifle with 7 grain RWS Hobby pellets. DO NOT SHOOT LIGHT PELLETS IN THIS GUN or you'll ruin it.

Here's some numbers to save you some time experimenting:
