First PCP.....HELP!
« on: January 19, 2010, 10:22:30 PM »
I've been looking for sometime into a PCP and my decision has come down to the Benji Marauder or the Disco.  Obviously, the Disco with the hand pump is significantly less expensive but is the quality and different?  Is one anymore accurate that the other?  Other than the indexing mag and the quietness are there any other major advantages to the Marauder?

Having had both the Marauder is more of full grown rifle, it's bigger, built more solid, less toy-like looking. Full adjustability and choked barrel are definately a plus. The disco on the other hand would make a great hunting in the woods rifle you can carry all day with no problem.

Hope this helps

Overall the Marauder seems to be a notch higher in quality than the Disco. The MRod is certainly more advanced technology. If nothing else the MRod has a much nicer trigger than the Disco.

Get the Marauder. If you get the disco for the price, you will end up spending more because after the fact...the lust of the better PCP (Marauder) will always hunt you!

I own both.  Both are great hunters and have performed well for me.  The Marauder has the benefit of the 10 shot rotary clip, which is great when you need a real fast second shot while hunting, the shrouded barrel which makes it extremely quiet and an outstanding trigger.  The Marauder of course also can easily be tuned and fine tweaked to your liking.    The Disco is a great little rifle as well.  The trigger on mine is pretty decent but quite a few people wind up performing triggers mods to it or buy trigger kits for it which are available, as are simple but efficient power adjusters.  My Disco is completely stock and it shoots fantastic.  One of the nice things about the disco is that it's so light you can carry it for hours in the field while hunting.  As for quality of build,,,, I's say the Marauder has the edge, but the overall quality of my disco is very nice.  As for accuracy, my Marauder and Disco are both tack drivers with the right pellets.  It's a tough choice no doubt as they are both fine guns.  One thing to consider is that the Disco/pump combo gives you everything you need to start shooting as soon as you open the box and it does so for less money than you will pay for just the Marauder.  With the Marauder you're going to have to purchase either a pump, around $200 or so bucks depending on what you buy, or purchase scuba tanks, hoses and connections.  You didn't way what you want the gun for, paper or hunting,  or if you're prepared to spend the extra $ for tanks, hoses and connections.  I don't really target shoot, I primarily hunt, so from that perspective my advice for someone just starting out in PCP's for hunting would be to go the Disco route.  It'll get you up and shooting right away, give you a great hunting rifle and also give you the opportunity to get experienced and educated on PCP's so you can plan your next PCP purchase  :)

If it were me I would buy the Marauder and a Hill Pump. This is based on a few things and LIMITED experience on my part. Others with more experience may well have different opinions. We got an Evanix Blizzard and pump and it is great. Having the option for a quick follow up shot or three or seven... it is a good feature. It isn't that you are going to miss your first shot on a critter but have a fast follow up shot to make sure of a kill orto hit the buddies of the gopher or bird that stand around looking. It is having the ability to do some follow up shots without fiddling with reloading the rifle other than when your magazine is empty. Pulling the rifle from the sight picture to cock and insert a pellet isn't as nice as keeping all sighted in and just cocking for the next shot.

When shooting some animals motion is noticeable and they disappear quickly. With a repeater you can cock very slowly and quietly and shoot again on another target withoug spooking what you are shooting at with motion. Carrying a few extra magazines already loaded gives you nice options in the field. Less fiddling in the cold, damp or dusty conditions is always nice.

If all we were doing was target shooting I might be OK with a single shot rifle. Shooting pests makes me glad we have a repeating rifle. This is especially nice when on a tractor or a rise and trying to nail a running gopher or such which twists and turns while trying to evade the tractor and implements it is pulling. Very nice to have a few follow up shots then.

Thanks for all the input guys.  I really like the marauder and i guess I'm gonna have to save up to get that and the pump.  I hear the Hill pumps are nice but is there something wrong with the Benji pump?  I've also heard that Crosman has a $500 air compressor in the works but I've been hearing that since roughly August of last year.....

I went from spring piston to multi shot PCP....missed the single shot PCP's.  If I'd been into this hobby/sport earlier....I would've bought some single shot PCP's.  Nothing wrong with the Disco or Marauder.....as far as I know (I don't own either).....
