Paul, what make and model is your pooter and what do you mean by died? Won't power up? Blue Screen of Death (BSOD)? About how old is it? Can try to save you some money, if I can. Or,you can turn yours into one of those Targeting Computers.

Hello Dave, it's dead. The mother board craped out on me. I have had it since 01. I custom ordered it back then for moderate to heavy gaming. I have replaced hard drives, power supplies, video cards, ram, cd/dvd players/ burners on it since then. The only stock item left on it is the case, card reader power button and board with cpu. I have taken the hard drives and tested them in other pc and they work. replaced ribbon cables and even tried a spare agp card I had. The mother board will not send a signal to the LCD, boot the HD's or cd's The board itself has been humming or squelching for about the last six months. I knew it was coming but I have nursed this baby so long, i know her inside and out. I even tried a live linux cd boot and nothing. You can boot almost any pc without a HD even it with that. I have done it with this one many times over the years testing new OS's.  She wont even give a signal at all to the monitor. Dead, dead, dead.         Tell me if you  ever heard of this one? that squelching noise I was telling you about. I had this thing apart checking evry component trying to find the noise while it was running. Once it gets a little warm (and all my fans are working and everything is dust free), when I would move my mouse or scroll through a web page, I would hear this noise. I thought for the longest time it was my mouse cord rubbing the desk till I traced it down. It was something in the mother board making that noise. I guess it was something breaking down in it like a resister, capacitor or something. Well, she aint making any more noise. What ever it was that was going out quit. Now I am deciding on rebuilding this one with a little newer MB/cpu or building a newer one. I stopped working on PC for people when vista came out. I think I did one, but that was it. I always tell them I sorry but I dont work on them.  I'll work XP back to a 286, but dont give me vista. I hear great things about 7 and even tried it briefly on my pc but she just didn't have enough umph to run her. It seems alot better than  vista but the pc couldn't take it. What I really want to do is find a good MB and cpu and rebuild mine. I have  IDEE hard drives, not Sata. they have all my goodies on them. I have a very specific set up I like to run. Back in the day, agp cards was the way to go. I know they are old school now, but I would like a board that can take agp or pci express. I have a BFG gaming agp card that has a life time on it. It was one step below the very best they ever put out. It was a 6800oc.  I am still Leary of 7, its to new and I want to let them get the kinks ironed out first. XP has been the best platform I have found so far in the windows world. Any suggestions would be accepted. Give me a call and we can talk.

If you can't even see the bios prompt show up then it's DOA...key to a healthy PC is running cool, proper ventilation.

If you have CompUsa that's the same company. This is where I got my part when I built my PC's.  If you need help with any software..let me know.

Good deal Paul, hope I was of some help. Sorry the phone line crapped out that last time, we were having weather in the area. Let me know if you have any issue or questions when the new combo comes in. Max out that RAM and you should have a box that's twice the speed of your old one. Hope you get one of those USB to IDE/SATA adapters I sent the link for. THOSE are life savers for me. I have 3 of them.

Hang onto my number and drop me a call if you need to.

TTYL,

Dave

You know XP is being supported by MS until 2014 so would stick with that OS.  I tried Win 7 also and quickly decided that  XP is still better. I don't care for the built in advertising and no e-mail program of Win 7.

I haven't personally tried it yet but will soon. I have friends that are also network administrators and long time computer techs that say 7 is awesome. It has a lot to prove to me to be better than XP Pro. But, they say mainly it is less of a memory hog which makes your system run faster than XP. It also hasnoneof the security issue crap that came with Vista, the biggest POS since Windows ME. As far as email, it has been renamed from Outlook Express to Windows Mail and is included in the OS. It is supposedly better and has more goodies like junk/SPAM filters that OE does not.

I haven't heard any bad press on it yet and no issues with compatibility, hardware or software. I'm excited to try it but as with any new OS, I like to wait at least a yearor for the firstservice pack to fix any bugs they find. Nothing is more frustrating than being a guinea pig for Microsoft.
