Need some help with a CFX brake

Trying to get the brake off to replace a front sight. Set screw in top comes out no problem. Can't budge the cross-pin in the bottom. Is there a trick to this? I have tried first a tooth-pick to see if I could start it moving, then a slightly under-sized Allen wrench. No luck in either direction. Is the pin tapered, or can it be driven out from either side? I've drifted more than a few pins but this one has me stymied. Don't want to screw up the brake. (Why the h3ll they go to a contraption like that in the first place I'll never guess.) Going back to Condition Green. I used my Inner Bugs (while restraining my Inner Yosemite Sam) and managed to get it out. Filed the tip off a small nail and used it for a drift. Even with a spot of oil, the dang thing took some coaxing to go back in all the way. Not sure if'n I like these iron sights. Might have to fabricate a base for a higher globe and get a receiver sight as I like a bit more upright head position.

Again, help is no longer needed - at least for this task.

They can be a bugger to get out, one side of the pin is splined  if I remember right. I used a modified finishing nail for the job. Ed

Mine looked to be round, not splined. Maybe that's why it was hard going back? But I think it was just a tight fit. I tried the jeweler's screw driver after revisiting the earlier post, but gave up for fear of it slipping off and marring the brake. Gamo sure went out of their way in designing that thing. I'm wondering if a brake from a BSA might work? Of course, I would have to D/T the bottom of the barrel for the retaining latch and reconfigure the cocking arm lockup. Sounds like too much work, don't it?

Yeah...too much work. I shot mine at first with the open sights, but then wanted to take advantage of the high accuracy that a good CFX can provide, especially after the GRTIII goes in there!!! I ended up taking the front sight/hood off, and the rear sight, so I could put a Centerpoint 4-16x40AO on it. Very nice combination IMHO.

Well, I like irons so this is going to be a work in progress. I seem to be having to take a good cheek weld with the stock sights. The gun is fairly light for the power (IMHO, a Gamo plus) and that scope is on the heavy side (if it's the WalMart model which I have.)

Ah...ok, yes the wallyWorld one. Lighter scope? The Tasco Golden Antler 3-9x32AO comes in at about a pound, and is a very nice scope for cheap. And there's always the BSA 3-12x44AO...about 6 ounces more, a very nice scope for about 60 bucks. I've got quite a few in use.

How bout that Mendoza peep sitein conjuntion with the front optic. That might work good.

Anyone try the Mendoza? Heard good things but also they sometimes require a higher front sight.

I have the Mendoza peep. I'm putting it on a CFX now. Details to follow. You better respect me from now on Red...or I won't help you no more.

Ok, so the Mendoza will work, but the peep hole is a little too big and leaves a large margin for error. Adjustment range in any direction is great. Needs a scopestop behind it to prevent creep, because it does not have an integral stop. I also have the notch type Mendoza...but thats no better than using the builtin stock sights. In fact, the builtin stock optical sights arent bad at all.

So...my quick look into the Mendoza peeper installed on the stock rail....no good. Unless you wanted to experiment with somehow making the peephole smaller, then maybe it would be good.

Thanks for taking the time to do that. If I may, what range did you try it at? I shoot mostly indoors since The Law forbids outside usage. Aperture size can vary by individual. I would guess that the sight will accept a Lyman, etc. It's aluminum, correct? Might be able to re-tap. Again, thanks for going the extra mile. You is a gentleman.

Red, I tried it at about 15 yrds. Hit paper and called it good.

Thanks. I'm shooting about ten most of the time. Got one or two guns that just run out of adjustment at that distance, which is why I asked. I think I could change the front sight using that slip-on base system. Too bad Gamo didn't use a conventional dovetail system.

Yeah. And last night when I was slipping one of those front opticals on, I realized just how puny the dot size is. They could be a bit more generous in their diameter of optic rod. Its like a frickin pinhead.
