Bad Seal
« on: January 28, 2010, 12:09:07 PM »
A while back one of my GAMO Shadows experienced a dramatic drop in FPS.  Chrony results showed it had dropped from it's normal low 900's to 650 fps.  Still shot ok so I just left it to use as a backyard plinker.  Well, the other day I was looking for something to do and decided to strip the gun down and find out what the problem was.  Spring looked ok but as soon as I pulled the piston out and looked at the seal I saw the problem...... there was a good sized chunk cut out of the lip of the seal.  Matter of fact the missing chunk fell out in my hand as I removed the piston.  I ordered an Apex small seal from JM, along with a few extras and some spare springs I needed and they arrived in the mail today.  The rifle had been bone stock since I bought her and I had never taken her apart so while waiting for the seal to arrive I did a complete de-burr on her.  After dinner tonight I went to the workshop and replaced the seal, lubed the rifle and put her back together.   Just got in from the backyard where I tested her out under the flood lights......  she turned out SWEEEEET  :)

Oh yeah, I forgot..... you could see where the sharp edges of the spring had cut grooves into the plastic seat on the spring guide.  Spring was so sharp on the edges it was amazing....

I'll chrony her tomorrow but she definitely seems to be back in true form and she's shooting better than she ever did   :)  Can't wait to put her scope back on her and take her hunting at the duck farm   :)

Sound's like you got her up and running great Jeff, amazing what a new seal does for em. :) Gamo doesn't spend anytime taken the edge off those spring's and a debure and polish makes a world of difference with em. Keep us updated on your shooters tune result's I'm sure she's back to some healthy FPS. :) Ed

Excellent job fixing her up....now she can go G-Hog hunting with you in the spring.....and not being just a "backyard" plinker.

She had a ton of power before the seal went bad, I'm thrilled she responded to the lube/tune so nicely.  She was one of the 2  Shadows I picked up at Walmart a few years ago when they were selling them for 1/2 price.  The other one is stil shooting in the mid 900's and is a real hammer.  I'm glad this one is back up and running  at full speed   :)

was the spring just cut and left hanging there, or was it flush up against the coil next to it and just somehow sharp?

The last coil was flush up against the last one but the edges on both ends were as sharp as a razor......
