Air Arms s410 fixation
« on: January 30, 2010, 06:35:06 AM »
Hi All,

I've been thinking about getting something with a little more umph than my .117 Marauder and I seem to have a fixation with the Air Arms s410 in .22. The s410 gets great reviews, seems to have more power than a .22 Marauder (Straight Shooters data), a higher grade of engeneering, finish, and possibly accuracy, and still possess the things I most love about my Marauder... very quiet, deadly accurate, and multi-shot. I'm looking at returned/used s410's through Pyramyd and they run about $850. Considering you can get a Marauder for $500.00 I'm having trouble hitting the buy button. Anybody want to offer an opinion?

I would mainly use the s410 as an expensive can opener and paper punch but I would also eliminate a few varmints with it.

Thanks,

Don

the air arms is a fantastic gun but you pay for what you get.  if you're only going to paper punch and pop a FEW varmints then i would suggest the marauder because you can adjust the power up to 34fpe for the varmints and back it down for paper punching. (you can also do that with the air arms ) save yourself $350 and then buy a TIM MEREDITH custom made marauder stock to dress it up and you still have change in your pocket for a decent scope.  then you would have a nice gun, nice stock, and a scope for less than the price of the air arms.
The hardest part of getting old is trying to look good naked!

Al, Roger, John,

Thanks so much for the input. I think I'll dig into your responses before pulling the trigger. It drives me nuts to make air gun purchase discussions from reading stuff random stuff online and that's what makes GTA is a great resource.

I believe the regular length AA S410SL ERB (or something like that) FAC will give you 27 to 30FPE on high power. I have the carbine version so she gives me5 (Low power) to 26FPE (High power) using 14.3gr. CPHP's. As for Air Arms quality.....I haven't read any bad feedback on them (I'm sure there's somesomewhere). The Crosman Benjamin Marauder have had a few...leaky valve(s) and loose bolt handle etc. And I think a member here said some of the receivers did not seat right in the middle of the stock.

Of course this is just teething pains.....give Crosman a few more months and maybe everything coming out of their factory might be 100%. If Crosman/Benjamin had the Marauder out for over 3 or 4 years already.....I would've bought her instead of the AA S410SL.....just because of the price difference.

I am unsure as to the accuracy of the Evanix Blizzard S-10 guns but for power they are hard to beat.  I love my S410 ERB .177 rifle and my modified .22 TDR.  Some lube, washers and stoning for the trigger group improves the trigger two fold.

FX guns should also not be written off as they are accurate, powerful depending on model, and have plenty of shots available.

Yep, my .177 FX Cyclone is excellent. My .22 BSA Scorpion T-10 isawesome also (No power level control though....so every shot is on high power). And of course my .22 AA S410SL FAC carbine is wonderful.

Joe Cuz and Gene tried out his (Joe)Evanix Blizzard S-10 when he first got it....and they reported excellent accuracy, power, quietness and shot count.

Just throwing all that in to confuse you (Original poster) on your choice of a PCP. heh heh

Do check out the posts on the Evanix Blizzard on this and some other sites. I know it works well to 29 below zero. That is leaving it in the truck to those temps overnight and going out and shooting three 10 shot grops from it at 30 and 40 yards in those temps shortly before the sun comes up and temperatures start to warm up. Did it to find out how much air pressure I would lose in the cold.  Very little.

The rifle shoots very well in warm weather and next summer I will have it with me in Death Valley area and 110+ temperatures and check it out there.

The wood in the stock is beautiful. The workmanship is as well all the way around. It is one rifle I enjoy shooting a lot. Death on critters out to 75 yards. Maybe more but I have only measured 75 so I know it does that on blackbirds accurately at that distance. Later on I will shoot more longer shots to see just how well it does.

The power is there, the rifle works and looks good while doing it.

I do need to look at the Blizzard. I really want power in my next gun purchase so it would definitely make my short list. I want a .22 that will go out past 50 yards and still have some punch. I have read that pellets can shift in the blizzards magazine and the skirt might get deformed when it rotates. Have you noticed any issues like that?

Thanks,

Don

I was the individual having problems with pellets sliding back. i have since setteled on 2 pellets that work flawlessly in the Blizzard. The 25 gr JSB and the 28 gr eunjin. And I can stack pellets all day long till I can't hold the gun up any longer.

Thanks Al. Maybe the Blizzard is for me. I do have this insane desire to have a really powerful air gun.

As I said earlier, I love this forum. I just got into air guns a year ago and have a lot to learn. In that year I went from a hardware store bought bb/pellet gun, to a Whisper, and now a Marauder and a IZH-46M. I'm hooked... just don't know what the hell I'm doing half the time:)
