What a day...
« on: January 31, 2010, 02:26:28 PM »
Just when things seem to be fine, they go down the hole... QUICK

On my way home yesterday my Jeep crapped out 2 blocks from the house. Sputtered like she ran outta fuel. Got it home and tested fuel pressure "Crap... Bad fuel pump."
So I use the wifes car to go out and get one this morning. Dropped the half full tank and replace the pump all by myself 'cause my lazy no good brother-in-law's don't wanna wake up earlier than 6PM. Oh well. Key on, Key off, key on, key off to prime the system. CRANKCRANKCRANKCRANK... No fire. I smell fuel now though! Turns out the coil is bad too.... Yarrrrrrgh!!! This ain't no ordinary coil. It's a BANK of coils. A whole block that runs the length of the cylinder head. So BACK to NAPA for a coil set. No dice, they ain't got it. Now to Kragen... Ditto. Finally ended up at AutoZone and shelled out $135 bucks.  She LIVES!!!

Half the day and $200 bucks later my Jeep is back on the road. There goes my Marauder money! Strange coincidence that the coils AND the fuel pump went out at the same time...  Something similar happened 2 years ago. The TPS and Idle Control Valve went at the same time. Looks like things go out in pairs on these newer Jeeps. Never had these kinda problems on my CJ thats for sure!

Had an Olds with those modular coils. Who thinks up these things? It's a conspiracy, I tell ya!  :D

Hey, I just remembered something which happened to me last summer that will make you feel better. Wife's car has a low tire. See there's a nail in it. It's Sunday but I think a local shop is open. Drive to shop and, yes, big OPEN sign in side window. Park by shop, roll car until nail is visible. Pull nail with pliers and apply some soapy water to see if it's the cause of the low pressure. (Wanted to be at the shop if it needed repair.) Yep, it's leaking. Go up to shop doors and there's this little handwritten sign "New hours - Closed Sundays". Seems they forgot to take down the three by four foot sign in the side window. Run back to car and re-insert nail to stop leak. Call nearby gas station. No service available. Try two more - ditto. Move car to flat area and prepare to change tires. Good deal. There's a full sized inflated spare (on a nice mag wheel, no less). Get out the spare and the jack. Now comes the fun - no kit with the jack handle, etc. Seems the dealer must have left it out. Go to AutoZone, in same shopping center. Guess what - all lug wrenches are the X pattern. None with the flat lip on one end. Call home. Have wife bring van. Haul out the van's jack and X wrench. Go to break the lug nuts. Got nothing that will fit the metric lugs. Finally call AAA. Guy's there in twenty minutes. Jacks her up and changes the tire, adding a bit more air. Gone in thirty minutes. Why didn't I think of that? Car's back in business. Wife totals car about a week later. It's true - all true.

At least you had the ability  to fis it yourself.    What do you think it would have cost at a repair shop.   And if you lived here in the East,, you would have froze to death if you had to work outside.

And as for your brother in law....".what goes around , comes around."
Gentleman of Fortune.

Hum-bug!

I know whatcha mean Red. Been in similar situations.

John... thats just wrong! LoL

You're right Mike. It would've totaled near a grand or more having to take it to a shop. Not including the week or more without a car.

I don't mind spending the cash if I need to. But some things just seem a little over priced.

I figured something was going to have to be changed out soon. It's got 145k on the clock and not any real problems over the past 8 years. Just the 2 sensors, fuel pump and coils. That and normal stuff like oil, filters, brakes and tires. Hell, this one might just last me till I retire! LoL long way though hahaha.
