Don't try this at Home......EVER !!!!
« on: February 01, 2010, 02:36:12 AM »
I have been blessed with sons,  but they do the darnest things.     Yesterday,  My youngest son (in his 30s) along with one of his police officer friends got the bright ideal to discharge a double barrel shotgun.  Both barrels at the same time.   Loaded with 3 inch buchshot.    The result was not good.  The end result was a trip to the emergency room to recieve stitches to the web of his right hand.   You know the one ...between the thumb and index finger. The finger most of us point with.

What a dumb-ass.   He would not tell me.  Had to tell his Mom.

He should have " Hey Ya'll....Watch this"  tattooed  somewhere on his body.

Wow.....I didn't know that was possible.  Never owned or shot a double barrel shotgun...do own a pump action.  I always thought it was ONE...TWO pulls of the trigger(s) with a little break in-between.  Didn't know it was possible to pull both triggers at the same time.  Learn something new everyday.  Hope he wasn't hurt too bad.  Was the shotgun destroyed by the double whammy explosion?

Yes, it's possable with double triggers, but just thinking about the total recoil of that load times 2 makes my shoulder sore. That's got to be somewhere around 60 ft pounds of recoil - OUCH !!!

Lucky it wasnt worse. I've heard of guys cracking the stock doing that on some old doubles.

Hey Folks,   I'm home for lunch and have read the follow up posts.    The deputy is a long standing member of the sheriffs dept.  and like my son,   doesn't have a lick of sence either.  Barney Fife would have  exercised  more caution .

Got some details, and it seems  he held the shotgun down by his side and fired the gun like something you see in the movies.   I 'm guessing that the lever that breaks the barrels was responsible for ripping through the web of the hand.

Since he has several double barrels and a couple of over and unders , not sure which he was using.  But no report on any damage to the shotgun.  For all I know, he probably left it in the fields  when he  rushed to the hospital.

I did that same exact thing about 38 years ago. The barrels had been cut down......I fired from the waist.......the break lever was driven into the flesh between thumb & index finger. There I was, runnin' around the yard with the shotgun hanging from my open hand. Didn't go for stitches, but it took an awful lot of beer to kill the pain !!!

Gees! Hope hes ok! When I was about 16 I had Browning 12ga pump and I was out hunting and took a shot at tree rat and missed I stupidly pumped it with my finger still holding the trigger back , Sacred the heck out of me and left a nice shoulder bruise ( lucky I was alone and had it pointed way still)

I picked up an old 16ga SxS shotgun at a gun show last year. Never shot a 16 before.
When I finally had a chance to shoot it I loaded it with some light trap loads. I threw the gun up and pulled the front trigger. BOOM! Wow, I never thought a 16 would kick so much more than a 12ga. Next clay popped up and I threw up the gun to shoot. Click! No boom!
Open the gun up and both rounds had fired. Tried it again using the rear trigger first. Everything was fine. left barrel went off. Next target hit the front trigger and right barrel went off.
If you pull the front trigger first and both barrels fire! Whew.

OOOOOooooo!  :0

Sounds like he had the break lever jammed into his hand! I wonder how his shoulder & wrist feel?!?!?!
Did he fire from the hip or shoulder? I'm assuming it was from the hip if he got bit like that!

The ol term shoot from the hip does not apply here and would be a bad day at the OK Corral. :0 Ed

Sam.... he fired from the hip.    His hand was ripped but good.   He was unable to work today.   However, he is one tough hombre....just not a  real smart one yesterday.

So airgunandy....I'm assuming that was a defect in the trigger?
