Sneak, sneak, sneak, CRUNCH!
« on: February 01, 2010, 03:25:31 PM »
After all the good advice from you guys, I made a closer shooting position to snipe the evil possums! I had an old tarp that I draped over the fence and put a piece of wood down for a floor.  There were some bricks under my deck and I braced my flooring so it can hold my large rear!

Just like clockwork, I came up from downstairs to the ringing of the dinger!  A glance out the window indicated a possum in the bottom lands.  It took me awhile, but I got on my boots, found my gun, loaded it and started down closer to my target.  I was sneaking along just fine until my boot went through a crust of ice.  He looked at me, but I didn't want to take an off hand shot.

He'll be back!  I might go outside and wait for him :)  It has been SO cold here, and it actually snowed!  The only thing on the game camera the last few days have been SKUNKS! Not even the cats are silly enough to come out.

I'm thinking tomorrow is my night as the weather shouldn't be so nasty.

It's easy to dispense this advice while I'm sitting in a big comfortable couch inside a nice warm house. But I think you should don your cold weather gear and go wait him out. You know he will be back soon and if not him may be Coon Zilla will show up. I'll keep checking back for the latest sit rep. That fresh tuned TF89 has one owed to it, I can feel it.

Yes it does!  I just went out at 11:30 and ran off a SKUNK!  I saw the possum I call POSSUMZILLA just a bit ago so he survived my bad shot.  I must have just grazed him.  I can tell it is him because he comes from the other side of the road and his fur is red from all of the clay.

As mentioned you should be set up in your hide waiting for your target's to arrive and even have the shooter in position, just rest the cross hairs on the sweetspot and throw some lead at em. This has always been my method to snipe them day or night summer or winter. It can get chilly so bundle up and leave that trigger exposed through the glove for a better feel. When I do my night patrol Bandit and Country Rat patrols I would be set up in my hide between 9:30 and 10:00pm this would give me time to get my hunt Zen on and also to let my eye's adjust to the dark. You'll be surprised at what you can see and hear moving out there when your tuned into the night. I have had critters show up early so don't be surprised if you just settle in and one show's up early for dinner, sniffing and looking for danger and thinking about that food dish full of a tasty treat. Here's some more pic's from my night hunt's to get you pumped for your Country Rat patrol or whatever comes into range. :)

I'll get out there tonight early (if it stops raining).  One thing that is strange is that I see more animals when it is raining.  I'm not sure why that happens.  I may go out in the garage and get some tent poles and improve my "hide" in case of rain. I'd like to get down there and have the night shot camera ready to go.

They'll come out rain or not if their hungry and there's a steady supply of food for them which you provide. Keep yourself and the shooter dry bro and Happy Hunting. :) Ed

Better luck tonight! It seems the cold and snow seem to make noises louder . Yesterday there was a tree rat below my feeder I thought I was all set the screen out, the blind up, the camo down ( I had sprayed silicone on the window gasket and lubed the hinges) as I went to crank it open I found I had forgot to unlock it! I slowly did that and started to crank ( all this time hes still there )and one latch made a small click and he was off and running : (
