New Starling Rig
« on: February 02, 2010, 12:46:29 PM »
Yesterday my newest addition to the arsenal showed up. Because the B28 was not coming around as quickly as I hoped I HAD to fill the gap, so I went ahead and ordered what must be my last gun for the year. Not a good statement to make on the 2nd of Feb. But at least for now I’m feeling complete, the reason for my happiness is the pictured below. An RWS 350 Feuekraft Pro Compact in .22 cal, which would probably make a lot of us happy. I was in a hurry to see how it grouped so I ran home took it into the man cave slash basement and quickly assembled everything. Which included the RWS lockdown mount, with stop pins forward and aft, it also came equipped with an RWS 3x9 AO scope. After a few minutes I had it dialed in from about 12 yards. And probably the best thing about this rifle is it doesn’t seem to be hold sensitive at all. A 10 shot string through the chronograph reveals that straight from the box it shooting right around 745fps, I was hoping for a little more but maybe in time velocity will increase. I finished the shooting session with a 9 or 10 shot group that would easily be covered by a dime. Tonight she is just leaning in the corner waiting for the thread locker to dry. Probably a little overkill for the local starling population but I hope to hunt some small game with this rig too. If things go as planned I will have it out in the field this weekend to try for some starling or Eurasian Collared Doves.

The B28 will get some attention in the near future. I've got the UTG mount on order and it should show up any day now. I might order a new dove tail rail for it. The dove tail that's on it now has some slight damage to the lock pin holes from some of the recently tried scope mounts, the roll pins climbed right out of the holes due to the heavy recoil. But I'm not ready to give up on that gun yet. If I stick with the UTG mount the damaged holes will not be an issue. I hope to have it shooting as good as the 350 soon. The B28 is putting .22 cal. pellets out the barrel in 880fps range, and with that kind of speed comes some heavy recoil. It's a project gun but I do need to get busy on it.

Wow.....that's a very impressive .22 RWS.....a hit on a Starling will only result in a puff of feathers!!!!!  Can't wait to see some photos of the critters she'll take out.  Congrats on your new purchase.

This is what I had on my 350    http://www.pyramydair.com/s/a/UTG_Scope_Mount_Base_Fits_RWS_Diana_34_36_38_45_Compensates_for_Droop_Stops_Scope_Shift/2298

However, because of weight, I went to just a one piece mount.  I did have to shim the scope to make it work, but it is holding fine so far.  My Leapers AO scope was having some issues.  It is now on the Whisper and they love each other!

I bought another non-AO scope Leapers Golden Image 3-9x40 Rifle Scope, Illuminated Mil-Dot Reticle, 1/4 MOA, 25mm Tube, Weaver Rings, Rubberized Exterior, and broke the mount on it with my screwdriver!  I ordered a one piece mount with 30 mm rings (rubber makes the tube thicker), and it has worked great-no slipping nada.

Just my opinion, but you'll either need to shoot the B38 a lot, or get a lube tune at least.  Miy 350 was brutal early on to shoot.  The inside guts should look about the same as a 34 I would think making it not too hard to take apart.

Your new gun I think will be smoother.  I know folks here disagree between the clones and the real thing, but the real thing tends to be smoother out of the box, is delightful to look at, and is just better made.  That isn't to say you can't make the clones better because you can.  (Not trying to start anything I'm just trying to make a point and I don't know how).

Congrats on the new gun! If you get to the end of your rope with the B28, I can always buy another gun rack and it can have a home in Tennnessee :D

Welcome to the Diana family :)

What are you getting 740fps with?  18.2gr Crow Magnums?  With my old (untuned) 350 .22 I was getting between 748-753fps with CM's (very consistently) so that's about normal what you are getting because I think that's the pellet you used before w/the B28.  You 're getting >22fpe so that's not bad at all.  I wouldn't try any heavier pellets though.  The spring will slowly start to lose its properties like it did on mine cause almost half the pellets I shot were CM's and Kodiaks.  Try the 15.8gr JSB Jumbos and the JSB 18.1gr pellets.  You will find the JSB pellets much more accurate at longer ranges.  At 12yds though, pretty much most pellets will do well.  The Superdomes & CP's were accurate in my old 350 and were shooting 845-860fps.  My 2nd 350 that Timmy sent me is detuned a little and does 810fps with 14.x pellets and 780fps with JSB Jumbo 15.8 (most are actually 15.9gr) which is most accurate with.
I really don't recommend shooting anything heavier than the JSB Jumbo 15.8gr with the 350.  I was shooting CM's a lot and my spring was so arched/bent after 1,500 shots it wasn't funny.  I also shot 2 tins of Kodiaks (~400 pellets) through it.  I think if I stayed with the JSB Jumbos and 14.x CP's & SD's, it would 've been ok.  The mid-weight JSB Jumbo is the best choice for the 350 IMO and usually very accurate.

That UTG mount is not great for the 350.  It over-compensates for droop by a lot and most people end up shooting high and can't adjust their scopes to that extreme settings to bring the POI down.  Best mount is the BKL 260D7 or D4 which compensates for droop but not a lot, just right..  It's also the most solid mount I have ever used, better than the Beeman 5039 adj. high mount I have now, which has the windage screws come loose every ~300 shots or so.  The BKL 260D7 is non-adjustable but never comes loose with the 6 screws, and I never had to overcompensate with the scope's elevation.  It's perfect @ 25-30yds.

Good luck with your small-game/fur hunting.  You got the right gun and as long as it's accurate, there 's no small-game class critter out there that you can't drop with a single head shot inside 40yds.
