Torrington bearings at each end of spring?
« on: February 02, 2010, 01:57:46 PM »
Just messing around again and wanted some advice. Has anyone used Torrington bearings to reduce spring torque before? They are used in transmissions and other stuff. I'm probably a day late and a dollar short but, any info would be great.

Regards,

Steve

More than a day. Thrust bearings have been discussed quite a bit here. Consensus is they might not hold up and, should they break apart, there goes the gun, literally. A polished stainless steel washer and polished spring ends are probably as efficient. Myself, I just would not trust them.

Ditto on what RF said. IMHO, just another part to break,...or break down. Good clean contact surfaces with a touch of moly,...almost zero wear between tune ups. tjk

A very bad idea indeed. Do a search for thrust bearing and you should find a number of articles on the subjust. Just remember, they are not designed for this kind of applicatiohn. I've seen several times the damage that they can do and they can destroy a gun.
