Heavy Tar and WTG GTA SHOP!!!!
« on: February 04, 2010, 03:40:46 AM »
How much do I need to lather on this spring?  My Titan came right apart thanks to you guys!  I'm headed off to Bible Study and I"m going to leave it apart until I get back.  I'm also going to try and put some moly on the trigger stuff. With the new adapter you guys helped me with it took me all of 5 minutest to take it apart!  WAY TO GOT GTA!!!!!:D

I may even take the 89 back apart and work on the trigger group some more.

When I put it on my spring, I just wipe on the outside of the spring. Too much is too much trouble and waste of tar. I use moly on the tophat and spring guide if it's metal.

I do what Leo does,,,,, I put a thin coating of the heavy tar on the outside of the spring,, works great....

I got it back together but it isn't shooting all that well.  I'm going to let it rest until tomorrow night since I put locktite on both it and the TF 89.

When I pulled it apart the spring was kinda bent.  The one on the 89 was perfect.

It is dieseling some so I may have put too much moly on the cylinder thingee.

The difference between these two guns is I've shot the 89 a lot more before I did anything to it.  This one was almost brand new.  The Titan was much easier to work on, but I had one under my belt.

Why does the Titan only have one lever on it when the 89 has two?  Is the .177 89 like that?

Lots of opinions on this. Here's a photo of tar applied by someone that's knowledgeable about the process.

89 has the articulating arm like the crosman & makes it more smooth. Did you compare the spring between the 2?

The spring looked the same and were both equally hard to compress.  For certain the 89 is nicer, but I paid almost half again for it over the $88 I paid for the Titan.

I've got to find the scope stop for the Titan. I lost it somewhere and this one needs it at least for now.

Got to disagree with ya here Pete. It is important to have a good fitting guide but even then, when the spring expands and the piston reaches the bottom of the chamber during the firing cycle, the spring will still vibrate. Depending on the spring, some more than others. The tar helps to dampen the oscillation and it's harmonics assisting in spring longevity and reducing spring fatigue and failure. Having tuned and fitted several thousand springs and guides in guns over the years, I never assembled them without using JM's tar on the springs.
