Speaking of Tough
« on: February 09, 2010, 07:41:04 AM »
I took 6 today, and two "pass through doubles". I really shouldn't do that, and especially now. Still, I killed all birds so I'm happy. And it's pretty exciting.

But these guys are tough.

On one of the doubles, I killed one on the spot, but one ran. He presented me with a shot as he hid under the wheel barrow, and that was that. The other double, flipped both birds up and over. I thought, "this is too good to be true", and sure enough one gets up and runs. He stops under the feeder~20 yrds, and I pop him again and he lays still.

I glass the first bird, and the darned thing is sitting up! So, I pop him again. No further movement. Good. I go back t work, but think, I had better check on things one more time. Sure as heck, the second bird has moved. I follow his path in the 5" of snow and find him hiding half behind my target wine box. It's cardbord, so I put two pellets through it and saw no further movement. It took three/four solid shots to put that bird down. So, I get ready to get back to work, and that first bird is sitting back up again. Bear in mind that I saw blood behind him on the second shot at him. I got him center mass from the side. Now he's moving again, trying to flap his wings and jump up. I'm not sure what was pumping in his veins but there wasn't much blood. I bead in on him again and take him high on the body and that's that.

But that's 2 birds today that have taken 3 shots to kill. Tough.

(again, Crow Mags through a BC1200).

Nice going Mark.

Maybe some of those needing an extra dose of pellets migrated from here ? :D

No doubt, Paul.

Seriously, though, for some reason the "pass-through double" shot is almost always a quartering or side shot, and those are just unreliable kills for me. Of course, the follow up shots were also side shots, as I'm not going to wait for them to move. LOL!

Still, I'm pretty sure that no matter where you hit me with something a proportionately large (if a starling is 6" tall and 2 1/2" across, then the pellet would be roughly 11+ X 4mm or 44MM), I go down and stay down!

and Paul's Starling misadventures :)  Where you shoot the bird a couple of times, you look later, and it's standing or has moved..

Nice shooting btw Mark!! :)  I have yet to get a double-kill on those yellow beaks.

This really scared the hek out of me last winter because it had never happened to me before.  I had shot my 6th or 7th crow with the Condor .22.  It goes down on its side - no movement.  Dead like the rest of them I 'm thinking.. I never had to shoot a crow twice before, or at least not if it dropped like that with no movement.  So I go to the kitchen to make some breakfast and look out the back again 2min. later - no crow!!  I freaked..  I look again, and there she is about 15ft away standing there.  I get the Condor and shoot her again with 50+fpe of raw Kodiak power :)  Down goes the big crow with legs up in the air!  This time I wait a couple of minutes and watch the crow carefully through the scope.  There is blood splatter everywhere and many feathers in a 10ft radius.  So after about 3min. I 'm satisfied the crow is dead and leave the window to go make my breakfast.  I want the crow carcass out there for a while so she can attract more crows, and I can get a chance to shoot 1 more if I can.

5min. later I made coffee I think or something, I look out and scan the trees for more crows.  Then look down, no crow again!!!!!!!!  What the hey!?!  Now she about 20ft away from where she was lying a few min. before with all 4's up in the air!  She was walking slowly here & there very hurt obviously and stopping frequently.  I get the Condor .22 and load a 28.4gr EunJin this time.  Aimed at the crow's back and she was toast.  Down for the count - dead this time.  I went outside and confirmed.  Unbelievable.  3 shots into the body from a powerful PCP with heavy pellets.  You just never know..  It really creeped me out though.  I wasn't used to that.  This crow literally passed out after every shot but managed to regain conciousness and stand up after the first 2 shots.

Nice story. I'm actually thinking about shooting every bird that I don't eviscerate with a longitudinal shot a second time. Maybe just go for a head shot to hone my skills. It's more pellets, but what the hey...

The only way I've been able to drop those sky rats is with head shots! They are some bad ass tough birds.
