Crossman Premier hollow point tail question
« on: February 11, 2010, 01:25:52 PM »
Looking at this pellet the skirt seems short and not as deep as most brands. What effect does this have on it? It seemed to shoot okay but im wondering if the shortened skirt loses velocity over a comparably weighted pellet?

I don't know about the mathematical fps figures of such a skirt design as opposed to a "traditional"  skirt,,,, all I know is that the CPHP's work extremely well for me in my small game hunting, both the .177's and the .22's, out to 40 yards and sometimes a bit further   :)

Of course I also like that fact that they are one of the most affordable hunting pellets  :)

What Jeff (L.I.H) said. But the CPHPs are not as consistant as the "Better/Pricier" pellets. Out to 30 meters/yards I've always 2 to3 flyers (Shooting the GTA Target Shooting Matches). When I use the .177 Beeman Kodiak or FTS (Field Target Special) pellets I rarely get a flyer.....but those pellets are about $5.00 more per tin.

Here's some average velocity numbers for a few Crosman pellets all at 7.9 grain weight:

Rifle Crosman Hunting (cheap domes) Crosman Wad (cheap) CPHP

Crosman Storm XT 755fps 750fps 731fps

Crosman Sierra Pro 919fps 912fps 925fps

Hammerli Titan 941fps950fps 939fps

Gamo Viper 884fps 871fps906fps

Note: Storm XT had 5000 shots. Sierra Pro + Viperhave new spring. Titan had 2600 shots.

As you can see....the velocity of the pellets also depend the air rifle. I think some barrels have just abit smaller hole for the pellet so the pellet sits firmly in it. The CPHPs are pretty hard compared to some other pellets....so their skirts probably don't expand out as well to catch all the air.

Lose velocity faster than other comparable weight longer skirt pellets??  Actually no. Most of the Crossman Premier round nose pellets have a consistently higher ballistic coefficient than most comparable pellets. They tend to retain velocity and fpe better than most.Check out the Straight Shooters site for their comparison chart on many popular pellets. You can see how various pellets retain velocity and energy @ 10 yds,25 yds and 50 yds. But like Stanley said, you're apt to get more flyers with economy priced pellets like CP hollow nose. But, if you get a scale and weigh/match your pellets, you can probably improve the consistency of your groups, at least a little.

Ok..will try and exsplain it......
the shorter the pellet the more unstable it will become
at higher fps.....here goes....as a pellet flys the air hitting the nose
forms a neg pressure zone at the side of the pellet...the tail is designed
to produce drag to keep the pellet faceing the right direction...
Once the neg pressure zone reaches the tail there is NO more drag at the rear
But a high pressure zone on the nose...So the front wants to now become the rear..
So the pellet starts to become unstable.. once the tail moves to one side it moves
out of the neg pressure zone hits the high pressure air flow and is forced across to
the other side...And so on... WOBBLE..And when the action becomes to violent the
pellet starts to tumble.....

Now back to the short V long pellet....A  longer pellet can travel at a higher speed before
the low/neg pressure zone reaches the tail...And when this dose happen being longer
the pellet has a slower "moment motion" wobble as the distance from the CG  to the tail
is usaly longer in a longer pellet....

WADE CUTTER PELLETS...Only like lower speeds because the flat nose forms a low/neg
pressure zone at very low speeds & the flat nose forms a very high pressure zone at the front..
Front wants to be the back at low speeds....

So in short the centre of pressure has to be behined the centre of gravity for someting to be stable...

longer will usealy  be more stable & able to handle higher speeds...
Eg.....drag cars...Boats....Planes..etc etc etc

Ps..I have built my own aeroplane....

When i ordered these i thought I was getting the same Crossman Premiers that everyone raved about. I never saw the round nosed premiers ? So in essence why would i hunt with it if that ocassional flyer could make the difference between a wounded animal or a quick kill?

I might do what Progun suggested.....buy a jewelery scale and start weighting the pellets. The overall shapes of the CPHPs do not look deformed at all....I think some are abit heavier and some lighter and some perfect. That's what's making those flyers happen.

I also like the CPHPs for their low price....and they're pretty devastating to small critters even out to 50, 60 yards....if the pellet hits them. Too tell you the truth....the hollow points don't really expand. I think it's just a gimmick to have another type of pellet on the market. I've removed Crosman Hunting (Dome) and Wads, CPHP, CP Ultra Magnum pellets from downed birds....none of them had expanded. I think you'll need to hit a phonebook or something harder then flesh/feathers to make them expand.
