Pretty decent morning :-)
« on: February 13, 2010, 02:17:08 PM »
according to my new lower standards, hehe.  With all the night critters and squirrels gone, a "good day" for me is shooting a few Yellow Beaks  8)

3 shots - 3 kills.
I left the 1st one in the bowl where it fell and 3-4min. later its partner showed up and was doing fly-by's over it trying to get it to wake up or something.  It eventually landed and was carefully walking around the bowl until it came into view through the 3" opening in the blinds.  As soon as it stopped for a brief moment I put a CPHP through it too.  So you 'll see 2 birds in one pic but the camera flash didn't work and it was cloudy out, so it 's a little dark.  They both dropped like a rock with broadside shots.

The 3d bird flew only inches from the ground after it got shot and crash landed about 15-20ft away.  You can see the blood trail behind it as it skidded in the snow :)  The 14.3gr CPHP did not hit the wings because I was a mostly frontal shot but it was turned a little so the pellet hit it a bit off center in the belly and traveled back and out the other side of the lower body where you can see the exit hole on the left of the pic (where it's all red towards the back).

3 birds in less than an hour between 10 and 11am.  Not a bad day because I had to go out, and things to do.. you know like buy Valentine's stuff for the wife  :)

Thanks guys.

Dave, do you put dry cat food out during the day or something that would attract the Starlings?  They won't come unless you have to something to offer :)

Very nice Harry, very nice indeed.  Great pics of the harvest :)

I'm assuming you were using that deadly 850 of yours  ???

Great shooting and pic's Harry and I wish I had some Yellow Beaks stop by here. I know if I stuck out some cat food all I would get is the high population of stray cat's we have around. :0 Ed

Thanks guys.

Yes, I think for the first time I forgot to mention what gun I used.  First time for everything, hehe.  The 850 .22 is always loaded now and waiting for feathered action so that problem is solved :)

Ed:
I have  5 cats that come around too.  You just have to keep the Ding Donger on and chase them away as soon as they arrive.  They usually won't return for the rest of the day.  I say put the cat food out and give it 72hrs and the Starlings will find it, that is if you have seen them around hanging out on power cables or down the road.  My biggest problem is not the cats, it's the Bluejays.  I have about 8-9 of them.  They can eat a pound of cat food throughout the day easily, just like a flock of Starlings can do the same in a couple of minutes.  I usually just open a window or make a noise and once in a while shoot over the Bluejays and they go away for a couple of hours.  Just like at night.. gotta put up with the skunks and cats, but that coon (or coyote), possom, etc. will eventually come in for a bite.  It's a constant struggle to keep the undesireables from the bait area but someone has to do it  8)

Harry 3 birds from the comfort of your own home is really good day, probably a great day if you went 3 for 3.  The warmer weather here in Utah has opened up new feeding oppertunitites and the starlings aren't tied to my suet feeders like they are in the bitter cold. Great shooting. Thanks for pictures.

TimmY:
I learned from the best.. but I forgot to blow dry them!  I 'm not the best of students, hehehe  :D

I 'm the show-off?  Who posted a bunch of fox kills last year?  It wasn't me!  :o  8)
Noone has outdone that yet, so it's fair to say you hold the crown on showing off buddy, sorry  :)

PS.
Wait, we agreed 1.5 or 2 coons = 1 fox.. so Ed has probably surpassed your score with like 20 coons this season, hehe.
What's 1 coyote equal?  Just curious in case it returns.. 8)

Nice shooting Harry.

My Starlings have stopped coming around the feeder. They're not spending as much time in town and when they do, the flock is noticably smaller and they're staying in trees across the road.
