Its a bird eat bird world out there
« on: February 19, 2010, 02:58:24 AM »
I finally shot a crow out of a tree this morning in my backyard,,,they are a pretty good challenge.  To me the crows are like the Somali pirates,,,they work in groups and steal others' food.

So after I fatally shot one, with my Roald HPA tuned 850, I was waiting for someone else to light on a limb so I could take another shot.  My eyes were in the sky, and I was aware of something going on down on the ground where the crow had fallen but I assumed it was the crow still kicking - I didn't take my eyes off the circling / squawking crows.  After about 2 minutes they had flown off and I went out to see my catch of the day,,,and,,,,,it was gone!!   There was a lot of blood where he fell and I know he didn't hop off somewhere because I watched him for a few seconds as he went limp, plus I searched all around.  I was going to take a pic and then put him on my sacrificial alter ( a stump) to feed some other carnivore - which always happens - nothing goes to waste here in my backyard.

I did notice a hawk flying away with something in his talons while I was watching the crows, but I never suspected it would have been taken  that fast.  I didn't even get a pic to show you guys.  The mate of hawk had come around to see if there would be anymore offerings - but not today.    The crows pester both the hawks and the owls around my house, both the hawks and owls are nesting my 4 acres.

Anyhow,,,I am amazed with nature.

What I learned about shooting:  temperature variance,,,causes huge changes in elevation clicks.  I verified my settings at 35 yds - which used to be dead-on,,,and it was way off.  Its cold here now,,,in the 40's and my calibrations took place with temps in the 80s.   So,,,,I am going to verify more often now.

Pretty good shooting....them Crows are hard to take down.  Too bad you didn`t get a pic of the Crow....or the Hawk taking your Crow, that would`ve been neat.

I like that story.
Years ago I was dove hunting in a orchard in Fresno ca.
And I did not have my vest with me so when I shot my first dove & put it at the base of a fig tree.
Minutes later I shot another one so I went to drop off the bird & I could not find the tree, I was trippen.
So I found a can in the orchard & set it by the tree with my bird.Went on to take another & when I went back to the tree the can
was there but the bird was gone again! Later I saw a redtailed hawk flying around in the orchard with me.
I was feeding him.
I love nature also.
God has blessed us all.

Best you can do is think of it as your doing your part to help the food chain while doing some crowd control at the same time !!!

I had some Starlings that I know I dropped go missing. One I could see was "feet in the air" dead - but gone minutes later. Not long after it went missing I saw a Coopers Hawk land in a sapling looking  right down at where I'd last seen the Starling. Coincidance, or was the Hawk looking for more meals ?

Anyway, it seems the Starlings have also learned and dispite throwing out table scraps on the composte pile, and keeping the feeders and suet cage full, I'm not seeing them here for a week now. Only a dozen or two show up in the tops of trees across the road.  Meantime, today I saw a large flock that landed on a grassy patch right by the side of the road just south of town.

4000 lbs of steel mini van streaking by doesn't bother them, but 15 grs. of lead does.

I've been waiting for a chance to take one out too, but none has presented itself. Hopefully, one day, I can check that off my list too. Great shooting btw.
